We want to fill out the AKC papers for our GSD puppy and we do not understand the process. I named my golden after his father, Mozart: Mozart's Golden Lion King (Simba). Do I name our GSD after the sire, or the dam, which is the breeder's dog? All these german names confuse me. But I want hte name to look good in case we ever decide to breed him, so I don't want to pick a silly-sounding family name. His call name is Paladin, which approximately equates to Alger in German. So, where do I get the rest of the name and where do the "vons" come in??
Thanks!

most dogs are not breeding quaility its best to plan on having him neutered intact males can be a pain. As far as the name'' von'' means ''from'' so you could name him Paladin von such and such, whatever you decide .if the breeder had no kennel name.

A breed worthy dog can be thought of as the exception, rather than the rule. The spirit of breeding GSD is established with working, testing and titling the dog in herding or schutzhund. If your pup had been acquired from a working kennel, you would not be naming the pup. Kennels that work their dogs.....or even kennels that work the conformation ring, name their pups prior to sale....you as the owner can give the pup a call name, but the registered name is established by the kennel.
Love your dog, train your dog, enjoy your dog.....but neuter your dog. Because if you're filling out the AKC paperwork, it is not unreasonable to think this is not likely a breed worthy specimen. The GSD world needs less BYB, please don't plan on becoming one....which isn't to say that one could not read, study, and train in SchH to develop the skills and understanding of what it takes to be a GSD breeder.....it is no easy task, and something I will personally never attempt.
A great GSD kennel is something to respect and admire. They are the gatekeepers of the breed.
