Does this tend to vary in age when a dog cocks his leg to urinate?

Is their even any significance to whether they start quite young or seemingly quite late?

Or is it purely individual to the dog?

Thanks in advance,

Vixen

LOL, Chaos didn't start cocking his leg until about 2 years old!  He's 2 and a half now.  He lives with all girls and I guess didn't realize that he had to.  Now, he marks everywhere out side that another dog goes though!  It's funny the way he stands there and lifts the leg straight up in the air the way he does.  The next puppy will have a boy to show him the ropes though.  MAN I CAN'T WAIT until February, lol.  Happy Birthdayyyy too meeee with the new puppy :- }

Hello Shepherd Woman,

So relieved to have your reply, not only for your view, but also I was beginning to wonder if I had asked something highly technical as although people read it, there was no feedback about male dogs raising their leg, what variation of age, and whether anyone thought there was any type of significance or not?

Thank you very much for letting me know about your young lad.  You are clearly very much looking forward to your new addition.  Have a good enjoyable time together.

Age varies and it depends on the male. I am not aware of any specific age. But there is one funny corollary to this theorm and that is the dogs that stand and urinate in my opinion is not yet ready for his mate. In my experience in doggiedom the dog that lifts his leg and urinates will give you no problems in mating. Dogs who do not cock their legs are fussy maters.

Somewhere  starting about almost  1.5 yrs . Sabin will squat to pee with only a slight leg lift, then where another male had been he will try to pee as high as he can with a huge leg lift.  He is a neutered male.

Thanks Mathaus,  Found your view regarding this really interesting.  Much appreciated.

Thank you, Vixen

Thanks Malshep too,

Find these replies helpful to know.  My dog is a year and just a token side-way leaning.  (He is also entire).  So am finding these responses interesting.

Thanks again, Vixen

Our fellow was almost a year old when he started (also raised with a girl). I remember a friend of mine who imported a working line puppy from Germany some years ago, and he started raising his leg at a very young age (three or four months.) Differs from dog to dog................

When a dog cocks his leg it's not just a case of having a pee... he's also advertising himself to the rest of the (dog) community. He's now a man & here I am for all to smell!!

So he will only start to do this when he becomes more confident in his environment. And that of course depends on any number things, other dogs scents, the general confidence level of your dog, how long he may have been in the area etc.

Our own dog, although quite confident and fearless, took a few weeks to regularly cock his leg when we bought him as a ~18month old and he moved to a new area. But I have noticed that when he's 'miss desperate' he will invariably squat.

Of course some dogs who have arthiritis/hip/weight problems will find it more difficult to actually stand on 3 legs and cock their legs.

One thing that does amuse me is that when he does cock his leg more often that not he'll get more of it on his front feet than the tree...
