Around a month n a half back my dog showed signs of mange. Got him vaccinated with invermection & the treatment has been going on since along with weekly baths with ridd (a solution for mange) as prescribed by the vet. The coat shows signs of improvement but the tail doesnt seem recovering. The heavy bush of hair have vanished with very litle fur left on the tail. Well, now I am more concerned about the dog loosing appetite & a good amount of weight. I spoke to the vet & he prescribed some antibiotics as a preventive step for possible outbreak of para typhoid in dogs in india. Since I started the antibiotics (oflox), my dog has been showing reluctance towards the food. He doesnt even go near the breakfast unlike before & the dinner is also a struggle. I have to sit on his head until he finishes his food.

Today, the vet advised to start some liver tonic as well along with cod liver caps. I am keeping my dog on home cooked beef, eggs, vegetables etc.

Can anyone help me with this situation? Do I need to make any changes to his diet?

Prasac, I don't know what's wrong with your poor dog, unfortunately, neither does your Vet!  Please take your dog to another Vet as soon as poss'.

I have heard of dogs that have an intolerance to beef......Might be worth trying another meat source. fish might be more appropriate.

Perhaps a very good quality kibble,

Orijen, Royal canin, Timberwolf, Solid gold or Eagle pack are all good quality

Try giving him one starve day (no treats)

Give him some pre and pro-biotics as the antibiotics kill the healthy gut flora.

There is a spot on called advocate that kills most mange mites its very good

If this continues get a second opinion from another vet

Other than that I just don't know

How old is your boy?I too would seek a second opinion,Regarding his food i would try him with just cooked chicken ,and natural yoghurt between.

It will take him a long time to build himself back up ,so you must be patient with him.

Priority is to find out the problem.

I wish you and your boy good luck,Please keep us updated.

 Best regards

Shirley-anne.

Take him immediately to Dr. Anil Sood in Jungpura in New Delhi.

His mobile is 9811704297

give him my reference. DO THIS ASAP lest you lose the dog. Mange does not require repeated vaccination which most of the Syringe Happy idiotic Vets in India do

GOOD LUCK

Providing the dog has no hidden maladies, and just needs to build back up, a cycle of equipoise and B-12 injections should really be of benefit.

Yes  get some B-12 in this dog....if you dont like to give shots go to big drugstore, Pharmacy and get the liquid B-12 , the new energized immediate digestable kind and get him started on dosage for a big child...

GET ANOTHER VET>>>>

Chicken , rice and extra virgin olive oil,,,salmon ., fish caps.....all a must...and a probiotic.......not yogurt...it is milk derivitive...no milk ....get the probiotic from a Natural food site..........use the water of cooked  chicken to make food mushy ,,,,feed small amounts three times a day.....

.dont feed him for a whole 24 hours before starting this new diet and ease into it.....chicken and rice first and add the rest one day at a time.........

.rub  olive oil on the tail , face and legs..

.google olive oil   and it has to be extra virgin also.

..(no combo or just olive oil  as other things are added....)

prasac, for sarcoptic mange it should be 3 injections total,1 per week for 3 weeks IF its a bad case that cant be eliminated with Revolution every 2 weeks.Thats what i did once to rule out mange but it turned out to be what i suspected which was a food allergy. My young dog did not have any issues eating though. His appetite was good.I know Ivermectin can be harsh on the liver.PLEASE listen and get to another qualified Vet.As far as diets go ,there are several professional Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionists out there that will formulate a PROPER diet with all the salts, potasium, calcium etc.and in the proper ratios(meat to grain and fat).If you need any info on that let me know and i will give you 2 or 3 places to get a balanced diet.Hope all goes well for your boy.

hey domenic

can you suggest someone for a balanced diet?

I will definitely be consulting another vet today itself & starting up the b-12.
