Hello all,
I am having trouble regulating my female gsd's weight. I feed proplan 1 large breed adult. She is 18 months and I can clearly see and feel her ribs. I give her 4 cups of food twice a day. She is very active and I like that in her but should I be feeding her more than twice a day because of this?
A little of Her History
She is a Merlin vom Osterberger-Land & Gina vom Haus Yu breeding. Very energetic but listens well, no fear, dominate, (drivey) ball aggressive, food aggressive (I am too hahaha), but really good with kids. Social around same age and older dogs. Not good with younger dogs without supervision. She bites very hard-when she was introduced to the sleeve she knew what to do immediately! Her toy in the SCH 3 dumbbell and Jute. I had her since a pup. I picked her because my male is so laid back. She was not the best pup of the litter but the best for wanted to add to my breeding program. No pups yet not until I get a little more knowledge and paperwork under my belt.

that is ALLOT of food already, don't give her more. That much food for my boy would make him FAT in a week.... LOL try supplements, and adding things in, but taking kibble out as you do. The point would be to take away protein, and add fatty food.

Has she been wormed on a regualr basis ?
Is she due in season ? some bitches tend to run off weight when they are about to break down. Or has she always been lean ?, A photo would help

Too thin ,
I'd say rib's showing is too thin, or lean. Add a little fat.

My working girls have their ribs just barely showing. Just the right weight for what they are doing. As has been suggested, have her checked for worms. Look into some of the other premium foods. Stick with the 5 and 6 star foods. Even some of those are going through formula changes.....

Well, she does not have worms but she is very active. She is calm before training. I am not home right now. I will post her picture tomorrow. I did take her to the vet. She is in heat and lose weight during this time. Because we had been training so much on top of being already active her metabolism was burning more energy than normal. So, adding to her food until we eased up on the training was his advice.
I think that I will try the Royal Canin for active dogs or Proplan 1 endurance. It adds more fat. My wife just purchased the proplan 1 endurance. So, I guess I will try that. If this does not work I will try raw meat. I feed my male raw meat and he is changing really nice. Much less stool also!
No problems with her hips.....motion or diarhea.

Take her off the Large Breed formula...All those large breed type of food is more for large not athletic type of dogs like bernese Mountain dog, Great Dane etc etc..
If her stools are normal I would introduce a high caloric food. She should gain some weight.
Large breed food is made for not too active dog..not the kind you are talking about here!!
Good Luck!
