Are german shepherds prone to this? Does it run in the breed? Thanks.

YES :)

There is a simple blood test for VWD that is done by your vet its not expensive and worth doing.

any reason why?

Thanks, Tigermouse!  I was chatting with someone who has a mix breed that has this and I asked if it was common in either of those breeds, He said not really but he thought it was common in gsd. So I wanted to check it out. I had not heard anyone mention the word hemophilia as pertaining to gsd. Is VWD that vom willenbrands(sp ??) Disease? If so, that is the same as hemophelia?

VWD is more prevalent in Dobermans.

Haemophilia in Shepherds is generally different (A) and much improved (less of it) compared to 15 - 20 years ago.

Haemophelia or von Willebrand's Disease has been greatly eliminated in the GSD thanks to selective breeding away from it. I cannot remember the name of the last VA stud who passed it one, but he is now long gone. We must strive to do the same with the other debilitating illnesses of our favourite dog.

Canto Wienerau, wasn't it? And he did live a long time ago , in dog years.

Sam, I believe that you are correct. I could not remember that when I typed my reply. Thanks.

We have a very inexpensive testing system in the U.K, probably very underused, I believe there are details on Videx website. The "head in the sand" approach taken by german breeders was dreadful, complete denial and refusal to test. Cantos breeders and progeny owners have much to answer for. One case is surely to much, especialy when it could have been avoided by forward thinking. All my male pups have been and will continue to be tested, and i would always buy a pup from tested stock. The mode of inheritance can be a little baffling to say the least, but in the lottery that is breeding, forewarned is forearmed, JMHO
