Several months ago my 6 month old pup (then 4 months) was given antibiotics for scabs on her back legs. The vet said the scabs were most likely from mites and said the antibiotics would help clear them up. The antibiotics did heal the scabs but gave the pup diarhea. Today I noticed the scabs have come back and will make a vet appointment next week. I'm wondering if the problem is mites, wouldn't the other 2 dogs have the same thing, or not necessarily? I'll request the scabs be tested and hopefully will not have to go through the antibiotics and diarhea again. All 3 dogs have been treated with Frontline.

anibiotics do not treat mites. the sore yes the mites no! if what you say is the truth you are in need of a knew vet.ivermectin or the likes of for mites .not antibiotics.

The antibiotics were for the sores, not the mites. I wasn't given any suggestions or recommended treatment for the suspected mites as I thought the Frontline would take care of them.

i THINK YOU NEED A NEW VET.

Your pup has dermedic mange(red Mange), most probably,  and it is not contagious., other dogs dont get it...Nothing to get all bent out of shape about...Give him Ivemec according to his weight for approx 22 days , take back to vet and have him do  a skin scrap.. First of all I wouldnt walk back in that vets door, find another one.

I wouldnt hesitate one second on that decision. Any vet that can't do the proper testing before he gives you an antibiotic is not working on all the burners..If he had scabies, you still have to bathe in special shampo, actuall Head and shoulders for Dry skin, does fine..It has salycilic acid which removes the scaly dry skin and you brush and rebathe., or you can dip in a sulfur dip, and then give 1/10 cc of Ivemec per 20lbs for 14 days.. Red mange has a different dosage for the IVemec treatment..Do not use Ivemec plus for any dog...it is harmful for canines.

Most pups get Dermedictic at this age because of the immune system breakdown , teeth cutting and nerves of working line , german bred pups, that need to work and get anxiety because they want the work but cant quit manage it, thru the nervous system...They usually grow right out of it with proper diet, more omegas, vit ester c and raw meat diet.   Some people dont give IVemec treatment , and use herbals to do the same thing.. But you have to treat for 22 to 30 days and retest by skin scrape.

Their are holistic treatment plans for Red Mange. But diet goes along with the treatment.

Yellowrose, you were right. Had Bella at the vet this afternoon. Demodectic Mange due to an immature immune system. Plus she has an unknown infection that may or may not be caused by the mange. Got 30 days worth of meds for the mange and some antibiotics for the infection. Have to go back in 30 days to make sure all is cleared up. Plus had a chance to weigh Bella again. She turned 6 months last week and weighs 64 lbs. now. She's going to be a decent sized girl. at least 80 lbs I would think as she still has a lot of growing yet.
