Hi everyone,
I am wondering why out of 11 pups, there are no all black pups.
I bred my female to an all black, the pups are linebred 4-5 on Aron v Sachsentraum.
I am very puzzled, does anyone know what happened that I got all Black & Reds?
Here is a link to the progeny: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/para.utkoma
just incase that link doesn't work: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/para.utkoma?fadir=564061&modir=512363
Thanks!

...your bitch doesn't carry the black gene.

That is odd since both pedigrees have black dogs in them, I am curious to what others have to say

My girl Dana had an all black littermate,
her great grand mother on dam's side is all black, and grand-father on sire side all black.
but you could be right, she just might not have gotten the black gene,
as this is the first litter she has had, and using an all black stud just could be the tell all....
I have a yellow lab that after about 4 or 5 generations of not breeding to chocolate, she no
longer carries the chocolate gene.......very interesting stuff.....

Basic Mendelian genetics states that if both the her parents are carriers, which I assume they are since her littermate was black, then your dog would have a 50% chance of being a blk/tan carrier. With a large litter of eleven andno blacks, I would say she's not a carrier.

Cheer up, all puppies sired by a black will carry the black gene. So if you want blacks, breed one of these pups to either a solid black or to a carrier of the black gene and you should get blacks. I agree, given your breeding results with 11 puppies and no blacks, the odds of your bitch carrying black is almost zero even though there were blacks in her litter.

You just had the luck of the draw, though Alk has never been known to produce a lot of blacks, but the reality is you have the genes to produce blacks and the previous poster is right about breeding one of the pups to a black. Probably, if you repeated that breeding you would get a black.

I agree with the others. I have a solid black bitch bred to a sable. The sable does not carry black.. so will not get any black puppies. Both must have the gene. All the puppies from this litter will indeed carry black.
What color puppies did you get? What color is the sire? That may help determine if it was just "luck" or if your female indeed does not carry black.
For instance, in my case: the bitch is black, the sire is sable and carries black and tan. So I know the puppies will either be sable or black and tan with black recessive. If I did not know the sire carried black and tan, and I ended up with all sable, the other color that the male carried could still be a mystery, assuming I Idid not have access to what colors his other progeny were.

This is a pup produced by Dana's dad Xander & Dana's half sister Bonnie
Bonnie had 13 pups and only this one black girl....
her name is Nova and she is well loved and very photographed!
I've got to put her in the database.
Thanks everyone for you thoughts about all this.
Black dogs can be simply breathtaking!

It will be interesting to see what happens, once you breed one of these pups to a solid black, or a stud known to carry the black recessive. Obviosuly, your bitch does not carry it...or she beat some really big odds not to throw the black gene in!
