Rugers Guru

My sister has a chow, and she lives 3000 miles away from me. Her dog has serious skin issues..... I tried to convince her to switch to a raw diet, even gave her my recipes. Although she agrees with me, her hubby does not. I have convinced him to at least change kibble, [They were feeding Purina] So I recomended Blue Buffalo. She did find the BB.

But she decided to get Nutro Natural Choice - venison meal and whole brown rice formula. Any thoughts on this food Pros/Cons? I have no idea, but she says it is the same ingredients.

Thanks,

Nay

Overall not a horrible food, but, mostly rice, not meat (venison) meal. It sounds like she went to PetStupid (PetsMart) and was ambushed by a Nutro sales lady.

The Blue Buffalo is a better food whichever formula you are talking about.

I would ask her to try PLATINUM NATURAL !

It`s an European dogfood wich alo is available in the States. Most ingriedens is Chicken. More than 70 % fresh chicken meat. I give it to my both gsd`s and they do great !

I feed all my dogs on Blue Buffalo and it's a really good quality food.  I used to feed Nutro Natural Choice, but there's been a LOT of issues with bad reactions and even death as a result of the food and the company doesn't really care about addressing it.  The shelves were bare for many months earlier this year and when I asked I didn't really get a solid answer.  An online search found lots of people whose dogs were having severe reactions so I no longer feed the food; don't want to risk it.  I've tried finding less expensive food with good ingredients as I have several shepherds to feed, but really, for the price, you can't really beat Blue Buffalo.

If you in the are that sales Vetschoice dog food I recomend it, I pay 50 for 40lb bag. Can't complaing, my dog looks, acts just as expected on it. I would recomed RC as well but it is more expensive, and the quality is not as good as Vetschoice or Martink9formula, but both foods are avaliable mostly only locally so if you in the wrong area than you might have tough time getting it. Martink9forumla is really good deal for the money you get 55lb bag :) and I know a lot of people that been using it for  a while and never had a single issue. Vetschoice is rather new and takes a bit different approach to feeding but it is an accelent choice as well is just little bit more expensive when compared to Martins. There is a lot of good dog food out there, some might be smaller cmpanies but you will find that most of the time the small one actually ofer a better quality and better bang for the buck :) Good luck

What is the crude protein content?

The amount of venison meal can be estimated by the crude protein content; there isn't much else in the ingredient list that is rich in protein.

Note that calcium carbonate is added. This can be a good sign, meaning that there is not much bone and chance for excessive calcium. I bet the calcium content is not high for this food. Calcium carbonate is added because otherwise the calcium content would be too low. Knowlegable makers do not add calcium to achieve excessive calcium; calcium can be excessive because the protein source is mingled with bones, and the labor to separate bones from meat is too great for profitablity.

This can be a good list of ingredient, rice, rice and rice on the list do not necessarily mean that the protein quality and amount are low.

Thank you all for the input, I have sent her a link to this page. I think it is a trial and error with her hubby. But I think she took the two bags she bought, back to the store after I sent her the replies from all of you. She is going to buy BB. I hope his hot spots improve. I did have her buy a bottle of Lysterine [plain] to apply as well, and she said it seems to dry it up nicely. Thanks everyone. Let me know if there is anything else she might want to try.
