It is with great sadness that we announce today the passing of our dear German Shepherd, Zahn von Noch Wasser (shown here in user picture).  His health had been failing in recent months, and we decided it was time that he should have his final peace.  He died this morning at 8:31 am in my loving arms.

We first got Zahn in 2001, when he was just a year and half.  It was clear from the moment I saw him that he had that perfect temperament of a zealous protector and calm friend.  We had many hours of fun while Zahn was a youth, taking him for some intense training at the Triple Crown Academy.  He was happiest proving that he loved us and would protect us at all costs.  He also had many fun days just going for walks in the different parks in Austin or playing with us at home.  We broke one world record together (Mighty Texas Dog Walk).  Zahn probably saved Steve's life once when he chased burglars out of our house a few years ago in Austin, and he was present when Morgan was born at home.  He has been a loyal friend and fierce protector to our family.

But those are just a few highlights of his life, and we could write pages with our memories of our lives with him.  But Zahn's special gift to us was that, day in and day out, he made us feel safe.  We felt safe from danger when he was in our home.  We felt safe when the girls jumped on him and pulled his ears, knowing that he would never ever do anything to hurt them, but to protect them from any harm he saw.  He had that unique quality to understand and accept his very important role in our life as the trustworthy protector, the ultimate soldier, the comforting presence.

We will miss you forever, Zahn, and we will never forget you.

"There is a special place in life, that needs my humble skill.
A certain job I'm meant to do, which no one else can fulfill.
There is a special place in life, a goal I must attain.
A dream that I must follow, because I won't be back again."

So sorry for your loss!

While the sadness may seem to go away it never completely does. This isn't bad. It is only because Zahn has brought so much love to you and your family! I am sure he is sorely missed already!

May Zahn Rest in Peace at the Rainbow Bridge!

Thank you everyone.  We all do miss him so much already.  I don't think that I will ever not miss him.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts.

If you find your best friend sitting somewhere close to you, consider giving him/her a big hug for all that he/she does for you.  I wish I could have hugged Zahn just a few (hundred) more times.
