We have all heard it but what does it really mean for the newbs out there (me) and how do you look for it. Also how does it affect growth do they grow slower than most/faster than most? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a heavy bone dog.

I know the disadvantages of a heavy boned dog. It hurts like hell when they run into you or you them. Ouch!!!!

angus is a heavy boned dog - he ran into my knee and left a bruise the size of a softball! he has been getting faster in the last few months, but its still hard for him to stop! like a train lol. (he's just turned 29 months). he's gotten noticably taller, faster and a bit more agile (he's way big and kinda dopey ), but i don't know if he's a late developer because of his bone structure or his bloodlines or something else.

I don't believe heavy bone is the same as large bone. IMO heavy bone is more like the Akita look that so many people dislike in the german shepherd. This seems to be becoming more popular in the big "stallion" type males. It gives a much more thick and cumbersome look, as opposed to the more athletic look of some GSD lines.

i dont like akitas stucture at all but a heavy boned german shepherd is rather afrightning site to behold when its barreling down on your ass.you will know it when you see it coming in all its glory .and there not at all as clumbsy as you may think

I didn't say they were clumbsy, I said it gave a cumbersome look, as opposed to a more athletic look. I am not talking about the intimidation or power factor, I am refering more to agility, grace, and endurance.

I believe what they are talking about is a juxtaposition: the dog is 'heavy boned' as apposed to 'light boned' as a lot of people describe American showlines. They are saying that this is a substantial dog. I have seen heavy boned dogs without the 'chow' face. They are sometimes described as having 'legs like tree trunks'. jh

agility maybe not so good as 60pound czech dog but grace and endurance please to differ with you with proper training and exercize stamina is no problem ive seen them go along side horses on 15 mile trail rides and go all day get up the next day and ask to go some more
