My previous thread has gone, but for those who replied befoe, my puppy is now back at home since Monday (having spent a considerable amount of time at the vets, 4 times). She is a lot better, she has been eating rice, scrambled egg and Ensure ( a protein supplement for people) and has normal stools but is still thin. When I tried introducing a very little royal canin, chicken and baby food chicken this resulted in almost diarrhea again. I have ordered some Royal canin starter food which I hope will help. In the meantime I have a question regarding Ensure (and pediasure, for kids). It is a powdered protein supplement to mix with water, aparently easy to digest and contains vitamins and minerals. The puppy now likes it a lot and is digesting it well. But the protein is from Soy and this worries me a little as I know that in humans too much soy protein can lead to thyroid and reproductive issues. So, is it a good idea to continue with this supplement until she is better able to digest prepared dog food and meat?? Opinions please...(for those who did not read my previous thread, the puppy is now 4 and a half months old.

Many dogs are allergic to soy. Be careful!

If on the Ensure it says, hydrolysed soy,or soy isolate then you will probably be ok because in that form its only the protein component of the grain and its broken down enzymatically to make it digestible and to not ellicit an allergic response. That is the same soy that is in the R\C 24 dog food.

Yes, I just checked, Ensure contains soy protein isolate, also soy oil. The pediasure is actually milk-based but also contains soy oil.

Hi OSO,

Glad to know the pup is doing better. I would certainly be feeding her whatever she will eat and tolerate for now. Later, when she is doing better, then gradually start adding some yogurt, your normal kibble etc., in small amounts. Her gut surely needs to repopulate the bacterial content. She is not going to be injured by what you are now feeding, and in any case, again, it is a risk vs benefit issue. An emaciated pup, not able to tolerate other food will not do well in the long run. Feed her all she will eat of what you are doing now and as she heals, you can change things.

Good luck.

OK, thanks, I was basically thinking along the same lines. I guess the soya will not do any long term harm and hopefully she will be able to digest the starter food a little more easily than the maxi junior.

My dog has IBD and can only eat Purina HA which is hydrolyzed soy protein. No problems with it.
