FOUND!!!

The dog was spotted this morning by a neighbor, the owner was called and he was able to catch up w/him a few miles from here.  (Arundel, Maine) The dog was weakened and he was able to walk right up to him.  He pulled off about 30 ticks and was taking him to the vets and will update me tonight or in the morning.  Apparently the dog is hard of hearing.  The young man now in college used to work in a carpenty shop and the dog always went to work w/him.  When I last spotted the dog 8 days ago and Anthony got to see him from a distance in the woods, the dog never saw him.  The poor guy was soooo relieved!  I believe this guy really loves his dog.  He's in college and has a two month old baby at home.  He must have grown up w/this dog.  He was missing school and his family to search the woods everyday.  I know some people won't understand but this guys' name is Anthony, when I looked up Saint Anthony, he is the patron saint of things lost, so in addition to saying a prayer to Saint Francis I said a prayer to Saint Anthony!  I'll update the dogs condition as info comes in, the dog was missing 17 days!

Excellent news Zookeeper and kudos to you for all you did to assist! Hopefully the dog does not now have some tick borne disease coming, but I would bet he will. I hope the vet is proactive in this regard.

I just got off the phone w/Anthony.  He said that Max was delirous and very weak,  Anthony does not think Max knew who he was until he threw his arms around him then he was stuck to him.  The vet is keeping him overnight on IV fluids to rehydrate him and to make sure he does not crash, in addition he is on pain meds it seems that he has a back condition and has not had his regular meds.  He lost 20 pounds, although the prognosis seems good the vet said it would take a few weeks to regain the ground he lost.  The vet has also discussed special feeding protocol.  Anthony will update me further in a few days.  Thank you everyone for your concerns and good thoughts.

Poor boy.  Thank God he had an owner who loved and searched for him.

Too bad more such stories don't end as well.  I pray he has no lasting problems from his days out alone.

I'm glad this one had a happy outcome, at least relatively happy. Let's hope Max recovers and brings joy to his owners for more years to come. Yes, it never hurts to say a prayer.

Wonderful... !!!  I know how if feels to throw your arms around a Buddy that you felt in your heart you might never see again!!  The 5 weeks searching for Duke were horribly frustrating as I feared that we'd never be in the right place @ the right time for him to realize it was me... Walking thru the woods in tears when I saw that he was bleeding from the pads on the icy snow, and knowing how terrified he was of everything out there...  So glad that the ole soldier is finally back in safe hands again.  My heart goes out to the young guy for the hard times...

I'm very glad to hear that the dog was found. It makes sense that his hearing is poor, as many dogs lose the ability to hear as they age. I am glad this story has a happy ending.

Best Regards,

Bob-O
