Any top athletes, body builders, and knowledgable druggies, know to take their orals with grapefruit juice.  Certain studies have shown, where absorbtion of some orals was increased by up to 500%!  The grapefruit juice increases the bioavailability of orals by preventing CYP3A4-mediated first-pass metabolism in the small intestine.

Normally, the enzyme  CYP3A4, in the stomach breaks down drugs or vitamins, allowing only a small amount of the oral to be absorbed into the blood stream.  The ingestion of grapefruit juice, however, makes the enzyme ineffective.  Now this can be very good for absorbtion of certain orals.  It can however,  lead to toxic levels in other orals that should not be taken with grapefruit juice.

I always wash down my orals with grapefruit juice.  About 3 months ago, I decided to experiment with 4 of my dogs.  One of the dogs is 14yrs old, and one that I give several orals daily.  With these 4 dogs, I would squirt 10cc of Florida's Best Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice along with their orals.  Its not my imagination.  I can see a difference on the effect of the orals with the juice.  I know that many will feel this is not good, or of no benefit.  To each his own.

Primal Canine contains grapefruit seed extract.  Grapefruit seed extract is also used to treat canine flu.  http://www.pethealthandnutritioncenter.com/shopscript/index.php?productID=232

Some meds NOT to take with grapefruit juice.

Hmm funny I accidentally bought graperuit extract instead of grape seed extract my last trip to the health food store. Does it have to be juice or can I down the grapefruit pills with my other pills ya think?

tigermouse,  do you happen to use an insulin syringe to administer GF Juice, along with the orals to Cousin Ashby's Ferrets?

4pack, Thats a good question that I don't know the answer to.  I know the grapefruit seed extract is good for you and the dog, so its a good purchase.

There are medications that should NOT be taken with grapefruit juice......always follow directions on your Rxs, not internet advice.

I'm not on any prescription meds, as long as nothing screws with my birth control I'm all good. I only take a daily prenatal vitamin, cod liver oil pills, calc-magnes with D and Extra C if I feel something is going around my daycare.

I looked up GSE and what I read always refered to a liquid form diluted in water. Guess I'll have to look into it further.

I take my grapefruit juice with a little sugar and a spot of gin.

It's hasn't interfered with my birth control as far as I know.
