I just got a 16 weeks old GSD. She loves to dig. I have read 3 books they all say just let her do it. Give her a spot to dig. I think there is a way to stop her from digging. I am open for any ideas

Thank you

My experience with many, many dogs is that they will not stop digging. Some dig, some don't. You can try all kinds of things and just get frustrated doing so. Do yourself a favor. Build her a kennel where she can dig in the middle, resign yourself or your kid to filling it in periodically and make sure you have some sort of concrete footer around the edges so she cannot dig out. Then let the dog dig to China. There are some other ways to occupy the dog, like exercise, exercise, exercise, and training of course. But getting a digger to stop digging is more often than not an exercise in futility. LOL

My pup Bella started out as a digger but lost interest when she discovered how much more fun it is to play in the water and chase her ball around. Keeping them busy with other things is about the only solution, if you have the time. Bella is usually so tired in the evening she eats her supper and goes in her crate without being told, pulling the door closed behind her. A tired dog is a good dog :)

My dog's dig, one worst than the other's, and one not at all, and I do have to do a little maintenance from time to time.

They love the feel and smell of fresh earth, it's cooler as well.   I agree, let them dig.  Start a hole where you want it instead of letting them choose.   And take step's to prevent digging out of a kennel.

You can turn unwanted hole's into mud puddle's to stop digging but it only work's while the water stand's, then it's back to digging once again, in mud this time..LOL.

The only way I know of to stop digging all together is to lay down a wire floor.   Or pour concrete which I do not like.

If you had the time to watch the dog all day you could try correction's everytime the dog starts to dig or create setup's to use for correction's.

I suggest letting the dog dig in a spot of your choice and not wearing yourself out trying to break the habit.

Build her a sand pit in a corner of the yard or give her a wading pool and get her to dig in the water that will serve 2 purposes she can also water the garden.

Come to think of it, when Bella plays in the water she digs like crazy. I guess she's getting her "digging fix" after all but in a less destructive manner.

I've also got a digger, but she's found something better than the lawn or flower beds.  Recently clearing some ground I left a large trug 3/4 full of earth, it then rained on top of it.  I have been reliably informed by a certain GSD Bitch that this is the BEST place to dig in as you get twice as muddy and it spashes you too!

Mind you the lawn is safe for a while and I can hose the slabs down that it stands on.  Just takes 3 times as long to get the dog clean.

put her poo in the holes...... works most of the time unless you get a realy gross pup  who likes to play in her mess lol

I would not recomened putting poo in the whole as this might teach her even worst habbit like eating it :) Two moons advise is the best one, either let her dig or work on correction.

I hate this issue, all mine dig. My husband wants this perfect green grass. I can not tell you how many times I go buy patches of it and fix it. One thing I have noticed thou, I feed Eagle pack, Holistic and since the change when they go on the grass, I have no dead spots, So the hubby thinks I have atleast "trained" them on that issue.
