I was watching a video of one of the top VA males at the 2007 NASS.  please excuse my ignorace, but are you able to grab your dogs collar and walk away from the helper during a routine?  I thought at a trial you were allowed to do that, unless judges orders to get your dog. or was the video I saw just a practice run?

I think at the SS there is just a test to make sure the dog has "what it takes".  I think the SS is a conformation show and not a SchH trial so they are not expected to do a full routine,  just a suitability test so to speak.

Yes. Once the dog releases (or not) you can grab its collar and put it on leash. Its basically a Korung routine, not a schutzhund trial routine.

well, whats the point in that!

I would want to make sure that that male who is getting the VA1 or VA2 position and, who will also be getting alot of breedings after, could actually do the work, not be walked through the routine like the handler is holding its paw. How can you see courage, spirit, and training if someone is constantly grabbing the dog by the collar and walking off?  I thought that is why we did obed. training. the dog should be manageable enough to call off and heel in position W/O having the handler holding it by a leash or collar

I've been to plenty of working trials in my area and have never seen this done except for when a dog would not out or recall and the judge told the handler to go collect their dog.

I have never been to a major conformation show, so did not know this was allowed to go on.  What a waste, JMO

They don't want to streess those dogs :) the ida is they got their SCH title already so why put them through again :) it is a bad idea I agree.

As PER THE RULES OF THE SIEGER SHOW(which we KNOW are NEVER followed or ENFORCED), and i QUOTE, from UScA Website...

"The handler should, after the attack, leash their dog without physical restraint (such as, grabbing the dog to prevent re-grip). The dog may receive an extra command to out to put the leash on the dog with no penalty; however, the dog that must be physically restrained or taken off of the sleeve physically will be disqualified. Once the dog is secured on lead, this exercise is over."

Need I say more?

Well, I think the idea is that the dog must have to be titled to qualify for the SS, like Snajper said!  They already paid their dues and got the title so why ruffel that beautiful fur, break a tooth on the sleeve, or risk injury to that future super stud!  Kind of silly if you ask me!  But to some showline people the scores for the work isn't important it is the fact that they got the title that is, even if it is minimum scores!

but these titles are generally being given by judges who are friends to the breeders, and the dogs are titled on home turf.  I think that the SS should be the one place that the dog MUST perform well, especially to receive that covetted VA title.  man, that just makes me view the VA title and top sieger wins like a grain of salt.  not really an accomplishment in my book. and definitly not a way to show your dog is capable of improving the breed.  wasn't this the main complaint on american dogs and shows? the dogs were just there to look pretty?

I am not picking on showlines either.  I have showlines, but I expect my dogs do be able to get out there just like a working dog and perform. not be babied.

There is something seriously wrong here if this is how our top show dogs are being treated.  I've always wanted to go to a Sieger show, but after hearing this, I am left with a bad taste in my mouth.
