Worried about my 3yr old GSD, He has had his kennel cough vaccine this yr,
Last week he started coughing with really long lengths of coughing, I took him to the vets
Who have put him on antibiotics and pain killers the vet couldn’t see any reason ie throat clear no temp he has tomorrows antibiotics left then that’s it,
His coughing has changed to short lengths in time but a lot more frequent,
There is no pattern in attacks ie running getting up from sleep, his voice has changed to a very deep coarse bark.
He is not the sort of dog to get anything stuck in his throat as he doesn’t have bones or sticks and never picks anything up while out on walks.
He has stopped playing with my other 2 dogs as it brings on a coughing fit and he seems very quiet.
Has anyone got any idea what this could be.
Thanks
Eileen

i am no exert on this but could it be lung worm/heart worm ?
kennel cough is a complicated virus and can be serious in dogs that have a weak immune system
f i were you i would take him back to the vets, just to be on the safe side.
i hope he gets better soon please let us know how he gets on

Did you have a chest x-ray done? The dog may have pneumonia with or instead of kennel cough. Where do you live? He may now have a chronic bronchitis, just like humans get from coughs. Or he could have some other infection going on and/or the present infection not fully gone. I would take him back to the vet and definitely ask the vet about having an x-ray done. Also consider giving a longer and perhaps more broad spectrum antibiotic. I would also just keep him quiet and not let him be playing with the other dogs until this clears up.
Good luck.

I just read this and I think its a good idea to get your dog to the vet. And if you feel your vet may not be treating him aggressively enough, get a second opinion. If your dog was feverish, it would signal some type of immune response to an infection. Its hard to say whether it might be a developing chronic non-malignant condition and without lab work any guesses are just that. Best thing to do is keep him quiet and get him looked at. Get a second opinion if you feel it is being undertreated. I would do the same for my dog or myself for that matter.
Take care! I hope things turn out for your pup!

What good are vet's if they can't tell you what is wrong with your dog???
Surely there must be something wrong with the profession.
I must admit I have two vet's I use, one for cheap med's because he has to bring in business somehow, and one who know's his shit but is expensive.
Does money really determine quality??
Yes I guess it does. Ask around because they all have a reputation one way or the other.
Get another opinion if you don't trust the vet your seeing now.

My vet here in the USA has told me that there are many strains of kennel cough and the vaccine only covers a certain portion of them. Hope this helps ...... Regards ........ G

As sad as it sound's I have the same concern's with dentist's and M.D.'s I use for my family.
I could tell you horror stories.
There are too many professional's who are half assed and don't give a damned.
It's a sign of our time's.
