We are trying to mate 2 dogs. The bitch is in season, she even stands for the male. The male is mounting but the bulb is swelling outside.

Someone mentioned that we should hold them tightly in place regaless of the bulk been outside for atleast 3 mins, the end result would be successful. Is there any truth to this

crazydog,

Sometime's animal's are assisted during breeding.    Maybe to ensure a lock up someone might assist this one.

I am not sure if what your talking about will work tho....

I'm sure someone does...  wait for it.

Moon's.

had a pair of peke's once, the male kept having "outside ties" so we held him on her, even though the bulb was on the outside.  1 time and she had 9 puppies! german shepherds are much different though.  would be back breaking work, why not just save your back and AI them?

We are not able to locate a vet who does AI, we did the mating and held them in place with the bulb out (it was very tough). I am worried if she conceived. The males bulb went down after a few mins and the male was exhausted and did not take interest after the mounting off, just like what would happen in a normal tie. Is this normal? Was it successfull?

I've heard of dogs conceiving without getting a tie, so fingers crossed for you.

You'll either have to just wait the time and see if there is a patter of tiny feet or at about 30 days get her scanned or blood tested to see if you've been successful.

I just tried poking my finger in her vulva, i feel its pretty tight thus the male's problem penetrating. Is it still too early for a mating

Maybe, maybe not. Some dogs just get a lot of outside ties. You have to try to hold them inside, lock your arms around them both really tight. Sometimes it works sometimes not, might be too soon. Try again in 36-48 hrs.

My male has sired 8 litters from 4 different females-all who have bred easily with no assistance (save 1 maiden who had to have a cocktail to relax before the first tie-LOL!!! second tie done natural next day-yeah!)

One bitch he has never been successful with and another we just this week had one heck of a time breeding her-she's maiden and fought him the whole time.

Your threesome story brought back funny memories of a hilarious breeding I had.  We live on a creek with rock bluffs and many trails. The dogs exercise several times a day running the trails with me. I had about 6 of the pack with me -one female in heat as well-I didn't think timing was right for mating so off we went on our hike. We get on a trail and in the blink of an eye my male is tied with her on a trail. Well of course they don't stand still and begin going down the sharp slippery ,rocky cliff side trail with trees. Fearing severe injury and/or death to them both as they are tied tightly I jump down the hillside plant my feet on some tree roots and hold each of their abdomens with each arm. This was quite the precarious position to be in and of course I had to hold them and run off verbally all the other dogs I had with me, wisely they all backed off.

So here I am on the side of the creek on the rocky hillsides for 25 minutes while these guys dance and prance!  Boy was I mad at my male, couldn't he have waited for flat ground!!!!

What a scene that must have been should an observer see us creekside (nobody around on our private land luckily)

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy's words kept coming to mind "You might be a redneck if....you've ever held two breeding dogs on the side of a crick!"!!!

My husband rolled on the floor laughing as he pictured this event as I retold the tale. Net result 9 beautiful puppies-so it was all worth it. But lesson learned never take them on a hike that close to breeding time!!!

Hi ,

Is it her first breeding, is the bitch standing for the male and flaging her tail.? Is the timing correct . Assisting is a skill, where you guide the male, into the female without exerting any pressure on the male's organ , while keeping the female steady. Most important the female must be in estrus.Minimise stress on the bitch and try to keep her calm.

Just follow Shelley's comments and wait a couple of days.
