Teas the heck out of him usually works :) lol.

Since it sounds like you inexperience, find a local club, they will guide you the right way.

Find a trainer, or a local club, you need someone to help you out that is able to read a dog, it is very important it is very easy to screw up dog for the protection face, experience handler, trainer will be able to point you the right direction, he will be in better position to asses your dog than people on this board, that can't see the dog in person.

genetics plays a big role.

Not knowing your goal for the dog or training program this is all most impossible to answer, But I know many very social dogs that when working are very serious so social is not a problem again depending on your training program. You have gotten good advise so far find a trainer to evaluate your dog and work with him.

I know that a lot of people on here think that training is the key to making your dog harder, but, who has the time?

What I normally do is head right out to the hardware store and depending on my mood (or the dog's) I buy either some epoxy or some cement.  Next I go home and mix it up and then apply it liberally to the dog's coat. After it dries the dog will be MUCH HARDER!!!
