Hi we are new to the post.  We have a 5 yr old GSD from a horrible breeder.  She was diagnosed with hip and elbow dysplasia at 2 years old, she also has allergies and had multiple ear infections.  We recently moved from Chicago are to rural Kentucky and the allergies actually seemed to have improved signficantly.  No ear infections in a year and only mild skin irritation (this compared to vet visits every 3 months for 4 years in Chicago for some allergy related issue).  We noticed a few days ago that she was starting to get very itchy and was scratching more than usual.  We spent the day at the lake and when we got home and were bathing noticed that she had major skin discoloration/change behind her from legs (armpit area) and inner thigh area.  Skin is a blackish color when it used to be whitish/pink.  Some hair loss/thinning noted and a round nodule under the right front leg (armpit area).  Needless to say we are making a vet appointment today.  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with skin color changes????

Josh (neutered male) has had black skin, in the same place as yours and between his back legs near his willie... he likes to sunbathe... on his back, legs akimbo on the grass and I think that had something to do with it but I'm not sure.  I bathed the black areas with Hibbiscrub and all is fine, his skin is back to normal again.

Have her thyroid levels checked.  It also could be a contact allergy, what is she laying on.  What have you changed that could be causing it?  Cleaning products?

I have a young male whose skin went black and scaly under the armpits and belly area, he had a fungus infection and when treated for this the skin went back to normal. He has had another skin issue since though - after recovering from the fungus he got a bacterial skin infection that was treated successfully (so far) with antibiotics. We are now treating him with a supplement containing omega 3 an 6 and zinc among other things, to help raise the defenses of his skin.

I know there is an issue in Northern breeds and pomeranians where the skin turns black and is really thick.
