Firstly - the 4 month old in question has already been to the vet. In fact during thle last two weeks she has spent about 10 days in the clinic. It started when she lost her appetite, then the next day diarrea with blood and mucus. Straight to the clinic. Two days later her brother gets the same symptoms, straight to the clinic. Feces samples rule out giardia or other unicellular nasties. Blood tests suggest a virus, though not parvo, maybe corona. The puppies do not have an elevated temperature. The male comes home after 2 days and is totally fine, absolutely no problems with him, but the little female came home twice and is now home again but is still not really well. The first time the vet said to just give her chicken or lamb and rice but she would only eat Roal Canin so I gave her that, but then she had lots of diarrea with blood again (sometimes red blood sometimes really black) and would not eat or drink again. The vet said that the prepared dog food is hard to digest, as her intestine linings are damaged, so the second time I just gave her chicken, she ate it at first but then the same happened again - stopped eating, diarrea. Now I am back to stage one, she is home again, at first she would eat chicken and seemed to have a better appetite, but now she only wants to eat Royal Canin, and refuses everything else including Ensure (a soy based easily digested protein supplement). I have only given her a few grains of dog food at a time but really do not know how to get her to eat and put on weight again as she is now very thin. I am giving her vitamin B complex and she is drinking water now. She still has a little diarrea but not much and its mixed with some solid and no blood or mucus any more. Its a long time since I had a sick puppy and this is the first time one has taken so long to recover. My first question is should I give her Royal Canin (maxi junior), is it really so hard to digest? and my second is is there anythig else I could give her to help speed up her recovery? Any suggestions appreciated...

 Hi Oso,

Glad to hear the older female recovered.

It would make things easier, of course, if a definitive diagnosis of what caused this condition in the pups was known, but, in the meantime, you must treat the signs, as you are doing, . Based on what you describe, the intestinal lining probably is damaged. It can take several weeks to heal, depending on severity. I would retest stool and look again for parasites. A virus could have done this or a bacterial infection. Has the pup been on any antibiotic? If not, strongly suggest considering it.

Also, I would try to give the pup something like metronidazole, even if there is no giardia found. It is very useful for its' anti-inflammatory properties and may well help. Do you have any yogurt there or any product with acidophilus cultures to help restore normal gut bacteria? If so, try giving it in small amounts over the course of several days to see if that helps. Normally, with diarrhea one wants to rest the gut as much as possible. I would not feed the RC, unless the pup will eat nothing else and if I fed a kibble, would try their baby puppy formula if you can get it. I might also consider using a pancreatic enzyme supplement, but you would have to just experiment with that to see if pre-digesting food would help for now.

Can you feed some boiled rice moistened with chicken or beef broth without the fat? I would not give her meat until the diarrhea clears up.  Also, loperamide (Imodium for humans in the right prep; there are several) can be useful, depending on the cause of the diarrhea. The vitamin B complex is a good idea.

Keep us posted. And good luck.

what popped into my head was possible vaccinosis so i ran a search for "vaccinosis diarrhea puppies" and here are a few links that popped up - hth

if you feel it might be vaccinosis these sites might be helpful to look at

i feed raw so can't address the kibbles question but this site might be helpful. it has all sort of links to various illnesses but here's the one for "diet for dogs with diarrhea"
http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/dog-diarrhea-diet.aspx

i feel so sorry for your pups & you.  i hope you find what you need. one more thing you might want to think about a 2nd opinion - not to slight your vet in any way - it's just sometimes 2 heads are better than one - just a thought - best of luck

Thanks for your quick reply, Hodie. She has not been on any antibiotics as the vet did not seem to think there was any bacterial infection. The first time she was back I did try giving her yoghurt, also lacteol forte which is a sachet of something meant to restore the intestinal flora, but I think that time she did not absorb anything, so I will try this again. I will mention metronidazole to the vet, I am not sure if he already gave her this as he did tell me that he put in the drip something that acted as an antiinflammatory specifically on the intestines and stomach, along with amino acids and dextrose. Initially I gave her boiled white rice with a little chicken and the broth, but she left most of the rice. Will keep trying and let you know. Many thanks.

Thanks justcurious, I did not see your reply until I had posted mine to Hodie. Will check the links. Incidentaly the puppies did become ill a few days after getting their last vaccine. I live in a small city in South America and only trust one vet here, however Hodie's idea of a retest for parasites is a good one,

Diphenoxylate for the Diarrhea or order Dibac out of a catolog that is for Diarrhea. I have used both products and they have worked good. But again ask your vet first

If the linings of her intestines are damaged, probably so is the lining of her stomach.  When we had a similar problem with a bitch an alternative therapist recommended doing an arrowroot and skimmed milk mix, letting it cool down and then feeding 1/2 an hour before feed.  This gives some kind of lining to the stomach and prevents the digestive enzymes from causing more problems.

Use 1 teaspoon of arrowroot to 1/4 pint skimm milk.    mix a bit of the milk into the arrowroot to form a paste then add in the rest of the milk, bring to the boil and then simmer for a few minutes, transfer to a feeding bowl and leave to cool.  We used to make it up at night so it was ready for 1st thing in the morning.  We used to find it made a big difference to our girl.

Many thanks for all the input, some good ideas here. Actually today we took her back to the clinic as she was just getting worse, not any better, now refusing everything and much more depressed, and obviously very thin. It seems her digestive system is just not working. Tomorrow more tests will be done, blood, feces and the vet also wants to do an ultrasound to check her intestines, spleen, pancreas, liver etc.. She has now been put on antibiotics as it now appears she also has a vaginal infection. Poor puppy, she was looking great and really happy and bouncy before all this...
