Hihi guys.

I was at my first show since I was just a kid. I showed my friends GSD bitch Isafold. We got great reviews but she got Good or 2nd price because her coat was too long and not according to standard, but on my way out he knocked on my shoulder and took the blue ribbon (N-Europe) and gave her disqulified...

It was very sad, and I didn't expect it, but they say she is missing undercoat.

Now this got me thinking, beside the showring there where two bitches including Isafold, the show ran a little late and we had to wait for 2 hrs, so I got to talking to the other showers and there was Isafold's breeder with her two full sisters from the same whelp. For two hours (first time in the show ring) these three sisters sat or lay watching the envoirment around them, calm as I don't know what... A lot of GSD were barking around, panthing and just acting all around "crazy"  (all from the same kennel). So that got me thinking, what do I want more in my dog? A not very good tempered show dog, (nothing wrong with the dogs per say but they didn't not keep their cool), or a very laid back family working dog?

My friend had planned on breeding her bitch before these results. So this was an over all shocking.

But I said, well you'll get her hips checked, her elbows, and eyes. You finish the MH test, and all working trials she needs to undergo and if she does ok in all those then you'll breed her. And we will show her again.

Well do you think I was right  telling her to breed a quality tempered bitch with disquilifing coat?

For me, she has all the qualities I want in a dog, she is a hard working dog, just wonderful around children and if her health is ok, why not? I'd buy a puppy from that litter....

Here she is.

I'm sorry for the bad spelling, I'm trying my best here..

I can't see the pic but no I wouldn't breed her. Sorry she sounds like awesome dog, keep her, work her, enjoy her, but you shouldn't breed her. Isn't it funny that the dogs with bad coats usually got the best temperament any one could ask for? lol It dose happens. I have one long coat which I love to death, but no I would not breed her.

I agree. There are plenty of quality females out there who adhere to the standard.

She has no undercoat that is even worst than being long coated. Many long coats still have undercoats.

Of course, she has an undercoat. It is hard to judge from that photo if she is a long stock coated dog or not. I can't tell by looking at her head, but her tail is quite bushy. Other than her being a bit easty-westy (at least in the photo), she seems to have nice conformation.

Escobar, even if she is a long stock coat, don't worry. The SV is bringing the long stock coat back next year. And once the FCI standard is changed, other countries will/have to follow suit.

Don't give up on your lovely female!

Her hair would be parted down the middle of her back if she did not have undercoat.  She looks like she has it...just from looking at her tail...and if she is a long coat, she is a shorter coated long coat.

Thanks Chris.

She isn't mine, but her whelp is the only one in Iceland related to my old dog. So she is pretty close to my heart I have to say....

They say she was missing the wool (don't know if that's the icelandic expression) the other breeders outside the ring I talked too.

Escobar,

maybe she was "out of coat", but she definitely has an undercoat.

Cate is correct, she would have a part on top of her back.

She sure was falling out of coat, Im new to the show ring and I was brushing her like crazy, and I remeber one breeder saying, will you leave some hair on her girl....

Maybe I overdid it, but wouldn't he have noticed that? He is a former gsd breeder, there should be a big gap between a dog shedding and a dog with no undercoat or?

I'm asking because I don't know ;)
