If I spay her while the hernia is being repaired can she still participate in Schutzhund?
Thanks!

My guess is yes to the second question but I'm not in Schutzhund.

I disagree.
You were told the mother tore the umbilical?
By the breeder I'm sure.
Did the breeder tell you if any of the littermates also had torn umbilicals?
The umbilical is not hard to fix, spaying at the same time would save money of course.
Breeding is up to you.

We had a female that had "hernias" in both litters she had "naturally"........her last litter was C-section.....not one hernia.
She was a very aggressive mother when delivering puppies.....(not aggressive-mean)....aggressive, as in wanting to do everything herself.....and VERY diligent to the puppies....too much.
She would be "excessive" in biting the umbilical cords, and caused the small hernias herself.
Only one ever needed to be repaired though.........
So...from the experience we have had with "that" female.......I can say, that the mothers can cause them easily.

If I was a buyer, I would chose that anytime over litters resulting out of untitled and unproven dogs.
A female I bought from Germany as a titled proven bitch years ago had a good size bulge and never had a problem with that. None of her puppies had a delayed closure either. For me, not a genetic issue and nothing worth discussing. If one of my puppies had a bulge, I would disclose it to the buyer and if they decide not to purchase due to that circumstance, no problem.

There were 2 others in her litter with these so called hernias. Like crhuerta said the breeder told me she bit of the umbilical cords a little to "aggressive" and caused these delayed closures. My vet told me she shouldn't carry a litter because it may cause problems in that area. I just wanted to check on here to see if my vet was just telling me that to get me to spay her or if she would be fine carrying a litter.
