I read that the second half of a split heat is generally fertile.

Is there anything different as to the timing of ovulation from regular heat? Does ovulation happen earlier or later for split heat on average than for regular heat? I am referring to the day of first blood of the second half of a split heat as day 1. I know there is no precise time known in advance, I am refering to the average situation.

My vet told me that ovulation does not occur in the 1st half of the split heat, but does occur in the 2nd. He compared to to a firework that you light and it gets delayed before it goes off. That is why there is a 2nd heat to the split cycle, because the eggs do not release in the 1st heat and when they finally do release, they cause the body to go into a 2nd heat 4-6 weeks after the 1st.

However, my bitch was bred on the 2nd half and did not take?? I was sure she would since this was supposed to be the fertile stage. However, this is my first experience with a split heat. I have never dealt with one before and hope I do not have to again.

Did you do progesterone tests to predict ovulation timing?

I've dealt with a split heat once so far. Took my import girl to a nice stud dog's residence and she was kept at the stud's residence.  Instead of going into standing, she went OUT. She had been actively bleeding when I took her, but quit by the time I picked her back up from the stud's residence-I dunno if she stressed over the vet blood-taking for the bruscellosis test then being taken to a completely unfamiliar residence or what. Stud owner wasn't happy with the inconvenience of it all (don't blame them-it wasn't anyone's fault), and I was just boggled in general. About a month later, she was back in, so  I just kept her here at home and when she was in standing heat, bred her with my own male. We had 7 healthy puppies from it.

So yeah, our girl's 2nd part of her split heat was fertile. She's had 2 litters since then(one being a stud job where she was taken away from home again), and no split heats. Got nice litters both times then, also.
