Today is the 53rd day of my bitch's pregnancy. She has gained quite a bit of weight in the past 2 weeks and her teats are enlarged and saggy (no milk, though). I took her to the vet to get her X-rayed and see how many pups she had. The vet palpated AND x-rayed her and neither showed any signs of pups.
Her last heat cycle was a split heat and she was accidentally bred on the 2nd cycle of the split heat.
My question is, how worried should I be about her reproductive soundness? Those of you that have dealt with false pregnancies, how many of those went on to have successful litters and how many continued to have problems?

How old is she? This is common and usally occurs in younger unproven females but also can happen with a older proven bitch. If this the first breeding you have done with her and she is young she may outgrow the split heat and false pregancy symptoms. I would suggest drawing progestrone levels next heat several times to get a base line and see were is is at count wise. If you have a reproduction vet they can give you more answers to your females problem but I would not panic just yet. I have had one female who had a false pregancy and she gained weight almost too quickly after the breeding and then went down boom all at once it was strange, to answer your question she went on to have many litters without problems.

I have had 1 female that had 1 litter of pups which was her very first litter and her second breeding was a false pregnancy. On her false pregnancy she gained a lot of weight as well as had milk, but no puppies. She eventually slimmed down and her milk dried up. On her next and last litter she had 8 healthy puppies. I don't think there is anything to really worry about, it is pretty common. JMHO.
