Dextrose, commonly called Glucose, d-glucose, or blood sugar, occurs naturally in food, and is moderately sweet. Can be purchased at many feed stores. It is a monosaccharide, and has a high glycemic index. (Once absorbed from the small intestines into the bloodstream, the dog's body uses glucose for 3 potential tasks
1. Given directly to muscle cells for energy.
2. Stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver.
3. Converted to fat for energy storage.

A dog under stress is burning glycogen at a high rate. As more and more glycogen and glucose is burned up for energy, blood glucose levels begin to drop-off, which in turn cause insulin levels to drop drastically. That is a very vital step to grasp because of the properties insulin has in relation to protein synthesis and anabolic hormone production.
The top supplements for both canines and humans use either glucose or maltodextrin, or both as a transport.

It is given IV to livestock. Raises blood sugar levels and reduces ketone bodies in the blood. Eliminates the usage of body fat for energy, preventing weight loss and possible death, in cases of extreme exhaustion in cattle.

Women sometimes get gestational diabetes, I don't know if dogs can get it too but if the Vet tested her and the bitch had low blood sugar that may be why he perscribed it.  It goes away after delievery in human's.  Have your friend ask the Vet about her blood sugar Ievels & why he put the bitch on glucose.  f he can't give her a logical answer take the bitch to another Vet for a 2nd opinion.

It was on another thread.  Why a Vet would perscribe a pregnant bitch (1 month I think) glucose????

Hello,

Gestational Diabetes in Women is HIGH blood sugar levels, due to a change in  hormones from having to feed a baby in utero, and the pancreas not pushing enough insulin to handle it.   Prescribing a bitch glucose means she has LOW blood sugar levels.

I am a diabetic, but don't know much about how it would be handled in dogs, but great topic!  Something to explore.
