Here we go again. About a month ago kaizer was having bad diarehha (sp?) so i took him to the vet and was perscribed methodizale or w/e you can use to treat giradia and coccidia. His fecal came back neg. but i gave him the meds as perscribed until they were done.

Well today it seems to be happening again. Very soft to almost liquid stools or they are decent in the begining but turn mush/ liquid toward the end of his bowl movement (i feel dirty just talking about it lol) and when they are decent formed they almost look like there is sand mixed in with it. It looks real grainy i guess you could call it and i read somewhere that it could be a bad sign of something but i cant remember what. He is on orijen LBP food and i dont want to have to change food until i know that its the only thing that could be causing it.

What should i do. Get a fecal and run a antigen test and request a full blood panel because i dont know what else to do. He isnt lethargic he eats fine and he is gianing weight ( 51lbs at at a little over 5 months old)

Any suggestions? Thanks you guys.Im real concerned

IMO Orijen is kinda rich for a pup. I feed the adult formular to my dogs along with RAW. I would suggest you get his stool checked at the vet again. He is also a good size so maybe not feed quite as much. To much food can cause diarhea too. To get him on track try adding some plain yogurt with acidopholis and canned pumpkin, about a quarter cup to half cup (pumpkin) a meal. Not the pie mix, plain pumpkin! Good luck.

He gets pumpkin after every meal. and i feed the Orijen LBP as the cal/pho are in the appropiate levels for a LBP and i was feeding 4 cups a day but now have cut back to 3 3/4 cup a day during this latest bout.

Theone

i have noticed a lot in the past that none or very few of you Guys ever take any notice of Posts submitted by myself. why do i say that is because very few are ever replied too, thats is okay if you think them not worthy of reply but i put down in some posts before others say a similar thing and they are replied to

My reason for saying this is 'TheOnes' asking for help and i really DO hope he will take note of this post and ACT on it, because having a Dog with very much the same problem as his and after 3 to 4 months of tests and Scopes plus costing over one thousand dollars to find out his problem, we finally got to the root of his problem with Food

The Dog is allergic to MEAT PROTEINS, and i suspect TheOnes' Dog is the same. All you have to do my friend is to go to your Vet ask him for Hypo-Allergnic Kibble, this kibble contains no MEAT PROTEIN AT ALL. My dog is perfectly happy and in good health, since he was changed on to this Kibble his Pooh went firm and stayed firm after only  5 days of feeding it

He put on weight that he lost and his coat started to come back to life and shine after 3 weeks

In Fact it saved his life because he was slowly starting to die in front of my eyes

TheOne , Do your Dog a Favour and go to your Vet and get a Bag, over here it can only be bought at a Vets not in a store it is a Vet prescription dog food, but it works

there are several brands but i use Royal Canin Hypo Allergenic HP

You will find your trouble and the Dogs will be over if you feed this food for only a week you will see a great change in him if you do not then send me the Bill for the Kibble, i will gladly send it to you and thats a promise, but i know i will not have too

Its something to consider but steve my pup puts on weight just fine. 51lbs at 5 1/2 months today and his coat is nice a shiny and soft that is where im confused. He is energetic not lethargic and drinks plenty of water. I want to get the obvious things out of the way and if it comes back neg. then we can move from there. I'm just at a loss right now and very frusturated with the whole ordeal. It makes training not fun because i have other things on my mind on what could be wrong with him but he seems to always show up to train so idk.

My dog has IBD/SIBO, and it started in a similar way. Not saying for one minute that's whats wrong with your pup, but if I were you I would have his bloods done just incase. We discovered at a young age that our boy had a very low Cobalamin level which is indicative of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. So yes, if I were you I would definately have his bloods done.

If my dog does end up having SIBO or EPI would that be genetic? Would it affect his trianing? Would, if later down the road, affect him becoming a stud dog or not?  Or would the only thing i would have to worry about is what exactly he is eating?

by My Guy Kai on 30 September 2008 - 12:09

IF (big if) he has EPI, it is genetic and he should not be bred IMO.  It will not affect his training in any way as long as you manage it properly.  He would need enzyme powder (fairly expensive depending on which one works for him) mixed in to every meal.  But don't worry about it unless he's diagnosed with it.  Someone else mentioned food allergies and that's another possibility.  Bottom line is he needs more testing to find out what's up.

I also have a GSD pup and feed her Orijen large breed puppy formula with no problems.  But since I got her at 8 weeks old I have given her a probotic with every meal.  I use Diest All Plus by  www.thewholisticpet.com as a matter of fact I use quite a few of their products.

As we all know German Shepherds have very sensative stomaches.  The probotic helps them quite a bit.    Any change in diet usually causes some sort of problem or adjustment.

Two days ago i gave my 5 month old female a raw chicken leg or rather she took it from her brother LOL  I heard this crunching behind me and I said Gunner is eating his chicken but lo and behold it was the little one crunching away.  She loved it and their seemed to be no problems.  The very next day loose runny stools.  She has been getting raw natural grond beef with her Orijen all along but never the chicken legs.   So the next 2 feedings I watched her close and just gave her the Orijen LBP and some ground beef and her stols cleared up right away.

So another thing to check has their been any change in his diet.   But try a probotic it should help.
