My youngster is now 8 months old and ambles 90% of the time.

The 10% of the time she gaits properly she moves well.

I found if I give her a ball to hold in her mouth when training she gaits properly but obviously you can't do that in the show ring.

Is she just a slow learner, is there anything else I could try?

Hello

I also had the same problem with my 11mo girl.

Someone showed me how to jump start them when you first move out. A thin choker works best and as you start off, you actually pull them upward off their front feet and keep going. It may take a while and a couple of good tries, but it does work.

Also I practiced with many poles on the ground spaced a couple of feet apart and gait her over them. That really helped too.

When a correctly conformed GSD approaches 9-12 months old, it will gait most of the time naturally and needs no training.  The only exception is if the GSD has a short back and very correct proportions it will pace at slower speeds occasionally and this is desirable.
