Does anyone have any idea if you can give venison bones to dogs? Are there any dangers or should they be treated like any other bone? Thanks!

mpd,
I have given these bone's to my dog's for year's and my only concern ever was the possibility of parasite's, but for the last several year's now we have had two separate disease's ravaging our deer population here in Southern Indiana and I have yet to find out if this is transmittable to dog's.
I would like to know myself if anyone has knowledge of these disease's. So far I have not heard anything to lead me to believe that they are transmittable to dog's.
I don't do anything special with the bone's, my guy's line up when I have butchering to do. My season is not far off.
Brent.

I've fed venison bones quite a bit in the past with no problems. Fed some venison meat scraps after it had been frozen a couple of weeks, no problems. It's been a seveal years, however, since I did that.
You aren't supposed to feed moose meat to dogs here in Alaska (by law, I think), as they carry encysted tapeworms, which are supposedly not a real issue for the wolves and other canines that prey on/scavenge moose, but part of the parasitic cycle that re-infests the moose herds. I heard, however, that freezing it for a couple of weeks kills the cysts, but I don't really know and haven't had a reason to research it further.

I'll let you stay here for free and I'll get you a day pass to Hilltop Ski Area, if you'll deliver our family from the tempermental Ms. Moose, who charges us in our own yard, LOL. Veronica

I feed venison necks a lot, usually a couple times a week, but it's not from wild deer, so parasites are not an issue. I have heard that if you freeze the meat to a particular temperature for a particular period of time, the meat is safe to feed, unfortunately I don't know the "particulars".

Thanks for the information. Now is the time of year that I get a lot of road kill deer that I feed to the dogs, don't worry, they aren't just sitting around rotting or anything. I get them within a half hour of them being killed. I will freeze everything before I give it to them. Now, I usually just cook the meat and use it for tracking, but when I am butchering them, I want to waste as little as possible. Thanks again!
