I have an eight yr old male that has chronic diarrhea. Vet found nothing, clean bill of health. I am guessing he is just food sensitive. I have only had him about 5 months and have tried a few different foods with no real big changes. Currently I have him on GSD 24. I switched to that from Canidae, he was really bad on Canidae. Any suggestions on a better food for him? Although my vet said he did not test positive for EPI, I am thinking of putting him on a herbal digestive enzyme as well. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks

Hello Nicole

Yes i can, I too have a Dog who if fed a Kibble of any brand that contains Meat Protein his stools become like water and chronic diarrhea,

I spent about 1000 usaDollars with tests even having a scope and xrays and samples of the small interstine done

The verdict was he was allergic to meat proteins and when i looked down the scope you could see patches of inflammation on the inside of the intestines, He was given a course of tablets and i was told to feed him an Hypo Allergenic food from Royal Canin

this does not contain meat proteins

Within a week he was going on well he has been on this food now for 10 months and his stools are firm and  are great he put on weight and he is now well and fit

BUT two days ago i wondered if he could take a little meat protein as it was now 10 months since he was left of it  I fed him one third of a kibble containing 22% protein today his stools are srating to go soft so right away that is finished he stays on the Hypo allergencic food from now on

I must confess i am not a lover of Roal Canin, but this Hypo food works well for the Dog so his needs are above my own likes and dislikes

The draw back is i can only buy it from a Vet, and it is expensive but what else can be done, the Dog needs it and the Vets know it

Give it a try, i will say it works 100% for my Dog and his symptoms were or are the same as yours. Go to your Vet and get him to order it you cannot lose anything but it cost me a lot of money to get to the bottom of the problem, so i pass it on to you hopefully to put your dog back to health

Steve

There are a lot of German Shepherds that have a problem with foods...particularly Beef products...I lost a female to this and then her son started to have the same thing...Anyways to make a long story short...I was training a dog for a doctor...and he told me to put him on nothing but raw chicken...and I did and everything's been great since...I do give him some vegetables and the such...but his main diet is cut up raw chicken...It's actually cheaper then dog food...the only draw back is you have to cut it up a little bit for him...Little to pay for a healthy dog...

I had a similar problem with a dog, and after numerous tests at the vet (epi, checking for parasites, etc) I figured out on my own that he was allergic to poultry.  He's on Taste of the Wild (Bison formula) and doing great.

There is another food which is very good for dogs with sensitive stomachs called Burns Diet. The website is:  http://www.burnspethealth.com/Burns_Brown_Rice__Chicken_for_Dogs.htm  it is wonderful food. Also did the vet check your dog for Giardia? This parasite is difficult to detect sometimes. A very good probiotic to use is made by Conklin and is called Fastrack, I would recommend starting with the K9 Gel and then go to the Liquid Dispersable a 1# container lasts quite a while

Sharon, I did have him tested for both Coccidea and Giardia. He came back neg. for both. I use liquide Panacur for our foals when we worm then the first time, and I treat the dogs with it as well. I also treated him with Albon  shortley after he came here.

Rainhaus, I have only tried 2 foods in the almost 6 months he has been here. I have  tried Probiotics as well as yogurt and canned pumpkin with no changes.

His stool is very mushy, not shooting out of him like a fire hose. Thanks again to all the ideas both on the board and the private emails :0)

I would cook for him. Rice vegetables and chicken. I would also treat him with Albon for 7 days just in case the vet was wrong.
