What is Van Den Heuvel Kennels forte - producing sport dogs, or protection dogs, or police dogs. I know that produce all three but again what is their forte in their breeding program?

I'd say more protection and police.

If your thinking about buying a dog from there I wouldnt, we have had 3 dogs from her and 1 had dysplastic elbows-questionable hips, another had dysplastic hips-fine elbows, and the other one had half an ear. On the other hand both dogs with bad joints are very nice working dogs with lots of fight and prey drive. But for me it's not worth it to put all that work into a dog and not have the option of breeding down road. that's all i'll say though.

Check trial results for USA, WDA and DVG. If You find very few, if any, dogs from this kennel being titled, that should tell you all you need to know for all three areas. This kennel was in Oregon for a long time and is now elsewhere (Montana?). Check with clubs in the region to see who has or has had dogs from them in schutzhund, police, or anything else..

They are asking $2000.00 for their pup's.   You can do a lot better elsewhere for less money.

A club member of mine has a dog from here, and the one thing that I can say is his temperament is awesome.  He is the most secure dog I have seen, and is a very powerful dog.  His grips are not the fullest and she has lost several points in the regional level trials because of this.  His OB is not super flashy, but she has worked really hard with this dog.  He did OFA Excellent.

I think they have several different stud dogs and lines there.  My club member does look in every UScA magazine and there is only one other van den Heuvel dog that she sees in the trial circuit, I think his name is Nitro.

I think it depends on what you are looking for in a dog.  If you are looking for a high competition dog, I have not seen very many Czech dogs, and I think this has something to do with the large difference in the lines, there are some dogs that you will see in multiple pedigrees, but often there are many different dogs and you may not know what you are going to get.  My friend's really happy with their Czech dogs, and they have a nice look to them.

I think it's a matter of what you are looking for in the sport.  Personally I have seen too many Czech dogs with shallow grips, that I would not chose a Czech dog for a competition dog.  I am sure there are some with good grips too, I am just saying I have seen many with shallow ones, and have seen the anguish it has caused amongst my club members.

Good Luck!

If you are looking at a pup from van den heuvel (or any kennel for that matter) may I suggest.... check the contract carefully. If hips are covered, to what extent AND are the elbows. Then when you get the replacement pup and it has bad joints, is it covered ??

I have 4 dogs from their breeding 2 have good hips and elbows and the other 2 are only a year old. They all come from great pedigree's, yes they are a bit pricey. Their contract covers hips and elbows, but only for a certain time. if purchasing a pup from them make sure just like every breeders contract that you read it through. I'm happy so far with the 4 dogs of vandenheuvel's breeding and we will see how the other 2 girls pan out soon.

I agree with Ghostly's statement. They have nice dogs! Period!

As KariM said "Awesome temperament and powerful dogs!"

For those that talk about looking for results in Schutzhund trials, please give me the names of kennels where you are repeatedly seeing vast numbers of their dogs. You don't. This is because for every 100 dogs sold to someone that is going to get involved in Schutzhund you may get one or two that actually follow through and see the training through to get the dog titled. Most of the people on this board have never titled a dog. This isn't a criticism, but, a statement of fact.

To the woman with the dysplastic dogs: Are you sure that you had nothing to do with this? Hip and elbow dysplaysia has been proven to be about only 20% genetic. In the other 80% of the dogs it is due to poor or improper nutrition, over feeding, working the dog too hard or running it too much while it is still growing. Blaming HD entirely on the breeder is unfair and I guarantee that Van den Heuvel does everything it can to prevent it.

The statement about moving from Oregon to Montana is meaningless and stupid. Who cares if they moved?

my young female's mother is from Van Den Hueval.  I couldn't be happier with her temperament.  her mother was super social and a total love.  My girl is a Norbo Ben Ju granddaughter
