Was looking @ Youtube videos and found a video of the 2008 US Sieger winners VA Males, top V Males and VA females:
and also of the German Sieger show VA Males, top V Males and VA females.
While it would have been nicer to see the movement and bite work of each dog thought these were helpful in being able to put the name and the dog together for those of us who don't know them all by heart.

The first video is the 2008 USA Sieger Show--not NASS
This is one of my all-time favorites: courage test of VA-4 at the Vegas at the 2007 BSZS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPQTI3FlzeM&feature=related

Thanks for the videos, very interesting . Anyone else think the females are better overall than the males?

Have not kept up with showlines in 25 years, but my observation of the "physical" differences in Germany and U.S male dogs, it seems that Germany's first five VA dogs seem to be of a smaller more athlectic "type" of dog. The American VA dogs seem to be more clunky and bulky. I don't know if this is by design on Richard Meyer's part or not, but his placings look more like they could herd all day than the US dogs. Having said that, the courage test that Louise posted is abysmal and no dog should go VA,(VA4) with that performance...JMO

SSDD--same judge, Meyer!
Gustav: The American VA dogs seem to be more clunky and bulky.
You mean those guys with the Akita heads? It is widely discussed that the hulky males in Germany may get their bulk from the use of anabolic steroids. So, why not in America?

I have noticed a kind of brutish bulkiness in some of the VA / V dogs. In still images I thought at first it might be due to a thicker undercoat. But some of the top dogs had this hulking quality that made them appear huge and a bit ponderous. Is it a good thing? Is it "masculinity" taken a step further? When I think of something (e.g. a working dog) existing for a purpose, I always recall the old Bauhaus expression: "Form follows function."

Use of anabolic steroids could explain why the females seem to retain their feminine characteristics while many of their sires appear to be overdone and ponderous. Are these incredible hulks producing more of the same or are their male progeny retaining a more athletic look? I suppose one would need to look to the pet population, dogs not sold or retained for show, to get a good understanding of that. It will be found out sooner or later if true when the males become sterile at a very young age and live a shorter than average lifespan. The benefits of anabolic steroids are profound albeit very short lived. Le'ts hope it's just a rumor; it's sad to think otherwise.
