After many years of only using very basic (and to be honest, very bland) Kodak and Microsoft Paint programs for my pictures, I am searching for a version of Photoshop.

Here's the thing, I have NEVER shopped for Photoshop before, I have NO IDEA which version I should buy, how much it should cost, and if there is a particular version that is pretty user-friendly. Any suggestions?

I have a Windows XP Service Pack 2, if that helps...

I know some people on here have and use Photoshop for creating lovely overlapping pictures of which could include a headshot of the dog and a stack, all in the same photo.

Any help anyone is willing to provide would be GREAT...I am some-what computer savy, but not at all when it comes to Photoshop. Thanks for any help!

Feel free to PM me if you wish.

Photoshop 7, CS2 (Just really an updated version of 7 with a few extras) or CS3 (Ibelieve this has loads of new stuff and would maybe hard to get your head round).

I would say personally photoshop 7 maybe the easiest to use but you would need to learn tutorials or even some college evening classes to get the full use of it. Even now after using it for 4 years  i'm still learning different or easier ways of doing stuff that i used to do.

Get paint.net - it is freeware and has most of the capabilities that photoshop does. I have an earlier version of Photoshop but today rely on paint.net for most of my needs.

There are several free Open Source programs such as GIMP that rival Photoshop: http://www.download.com/GIMP/3000-2192_4-10073935.html

I have a full version of Photoshop CS2 but prefer to use Photoshop Elements (now on version 6) for ease of  use and a cost of $80.

Thank you, I've downloaded GIMP and Paint, so far, I've been playing around with paint, and I think I might get the hang of it, someday

Thanks again, any more suggestions?

A very excellent free program, Irfanview, can use most 3rd party photoshop plugins. I've used it for ten years in conjunction with my normal editing program (Corel Photo Paint).

Below are some links to free plugins to use with Irfanview, some of them adding features that you would only typically find in a full editing program, like "levels" and "curves".

A cheaper Photoshop-like program that I use is called PhotoPlus.  Unless you are a real serious Photoshop person, you can do all the picture editing, cropping, combining, etc. in PhotoPlus that you can do in Photoshop.  I do a lot of website work and use this a ton for that kind of picture editing.

Paint is very similar to Photoshop. To the extent that you find it complicated, I suspect you will find the same to be true of Photoshop.
