My computer suffered a major meltdown yesterday morning due to the hard drive being packed solid with 5 yrs worth of dog hair and overheating. A friend was able to restore most of what was saved on the hard drive but said I was lucky I didn't lose everything. (And of course, I had no backup.) I should have taken a picture of the inside of the computer but was too embarrassed. Looked pretty grusome. AND YES, I HAVE A LONGCOAT :)

Most people would freak if they actually looked inside the cabinet, I've worked on many and even in a no-pet household the dust and cobweb's are unreal. A smoking environment is the worst, it cling's to everything.
It shouldn't harm your hard drive itself as they are mostly sealed, but the cpu (processor) , the little square thing with it's own fan on the circuit board, will over heat and that's when you lose everything. I have a dust problem and have to blow mine out every three or four week's in the summer. I made a special tool to use with an air can (large mechanic's size) out of a cut off basket ball needle.
Buying canned air is a waste and it's never enough.
Blow out the fan on your power supply as well. Mine has an extra cabinet fan to clean beside's the processor fan.
DON'T touch anything, and if you do make sure you ground yourself to the cabinet first. Even unplugged you can be shocked and static can destroy hardware and chip's.
If your not mechanically inclined call someone, dust bunnies can be dangerous when disturbed.

I cleaned mine out about a week ago. Glad I didn't find anything unordinary like this person did (Nov 2002)...

Oh man !!!
That could cause a person not to sleep very well at night.
I have had mice get in thru an open slot, little bugger's like to eat wire. And I have heard of ant's invading electrical equipment shorting out circuit's.
I normally like snake's, as long as they are outside..... LOL. I once kept a Timber Rattler as a pet, then I found out they were actually endangered were I live. He almost bit me once while feeding him a mouse. I have a beautiful hand made reptile display cage if anyone's interested..LOL The snake went back to the place I found him.
I could not sleep with one loose in the house tho, poisonous or not.
