Are hot dogs good to use for training a puppy? My pup loves hot dogs and we probably go through 5 of them a day. Just wondering if the sodium and preservatives would be harmful to him at all.

Hot dogs are your best friend right now.
5 a day is way to many. All they need is just a little tiny piece. What I do is chop them down the roll as if you were going to make pork and beans. Then I quarter those pieces. You end up with a piece just a little bit smaler than your girl wants for an engagement ring.

Why not? The preservatives are no more healthy for you!! If you are really worried about the "stuff" in them, get the "organic" kind from a health food store, or heatlh food section of the supermarket. Or, try Hebrew National, the only hotdogs that taste like what we ate as hotdogs decades ago, before all the "stuff" was being put into everything.
Just remember not to leave a baggie of them inthe car!! Phew!!!

Get a Real Dog - bite your tongue, this girl wants a rock bigger than that if I have to give up my independence
A boiled egg slicer works really well, if cut the hot dog in half lengthwise first and then use the egg slicer, you have nice little pieces.
But I agree 5 got dogs are distgusting! A couple of years ago I was working with Ivan and Carrie on the hold with Sasha and in one day Sasah ate 9 hot dogs GROSS, so the next day I brought cubed chicken breast, Ivan just shook his head and said that Sasha was Waaaaaay too spoiled! Hey it's demanding work that hold and I want her to eat good stuff

i use hot dogs for puppies and as treats on the track. i use the rolled dog food cut into slices and then cubed. better nutrition and dogs still love it.
gard,
you have had this dog how long? and i know of at least twice you have complained, or needed help with her.
i knew i should have gotten the breeder info from you and bought that dog. lol
keep having fun, and good luck.

5 high-sodium/nitrate-loaded hot dogs a day is a lot for a puppy. I won't eat anything but Hebrew National for myself, but for the dogs I use the cheap stuff, just slice down the center and then slice into thin half-rounds. Harder to handle than larger pieces but I worry about the chemicals giving them too much of that stuff. The roll food is okay too, lasts a long time in the fridge once opened, but I find a lot of dogs don't like it much, likely that smoke flavor. We get those thin, boneless pork chops on sale once in awhile for $1.99 lb. in huge family packs. Throw them in the slow cooker overnight, drain, (save the juice for soup/gravy, etc., frozen in an ice cube tray, then tx'f'd to zip locks and frozen) let them cool and cut them into 1/2 cubes. The husband goes ballistic when I tell him to stay out of the tracking bait, but the dogs love it. Better HE eat the preservative-loaded crap! His liver is probably about shot anyway.
My very best tracking dog I raised from a puppy, Onyx, was started with pot roast when I was on a pot roast kick one year. I always wondered if pot roast and V scores were somehow related. Ha ha ha.

I use hot dogs for all my dogs training...Obedience and Tracking...From puppy stage on up...but I let my dogs learn to nibble at the hot dogs from your hand...and I don't cut them up and give them to them...too much down time lost...If you teach your dog to nibble the whole hot dogs from your hand...then your teaching them to extend their "attention time"...by themselves...and not having to try to push it un-naturally...
Most of the time I try and buy "Chicken" hot dogs...less grease and fat...With a puppy I would say no more then 2 hot dogs a day...and I wouldn't be doing it every day either...You must always leave your dog wanting more...

John your such a comic.
I am going to have to be choosy with my decoys with this one. She gets real nasty in the bitework. Almost to nasty for her age. If I don't work with the right people, I am going to have problems. I would work her myself but don't have a handler and I don't want to tie her out so anytime you care to fly out here...........
I guess we could meet in the middle, what would that be Utah? lol
