I am outgrowing my current SUV, and was wondering if anyone out there uses a Ford Excursion to transport their dogs. If you take out the third row seating can you get 3 500 sieries crates in there? I'm trying to avoid the mini-van, but it looks like I might have to go that way.
Thanks,
Aaron

SUPER dog truck! Room for FOUR #500 crates and just about anything else you want to haul along. WIll pull anything, long wheelbase makes backing up trailers easier as long as the tongue isn't too short. Not cheap, not economical to run, not bad to insure, hard to find with low miles, especially the Diesels, but those will last a LONG time if you take care of them. More available in the Western US, and no rust because they don't salt the roads out there. Rides like a truck, because it IS a truck, but lots of frills on most trim levels, good seats, so comfortable enough even x-country. 4WD excellent in snow. the more you load it, the better it rides, and no significant difference in mileage loaded or enpty.
Get one for me while you're at it please!

The only mini-vans that'll hold four 500's are out of production: Aerostar extended wheelbase (last model year '97) and Astro/Safari ling wheelbase. (last model year 2005) SUV's with that capacity are: Long wheelbase base Suburbans/Escalades/GMC's and LWB Expeditions. No mini-vans in recent production have room for even two 500's side-by-side, but will hold a 400 and a 500, and another crate sideways in the middle, but full size vans will and Chevy offers an AWD model, by special order.

Awesome vehicle.
My buddy uses his as his hunting vehicle with 3 dogs & underneath shelving for gear. Its fantastic.
It SUCKS on gas...diesel does better, but costs more

I have one, too bad I can't pick you up in it Shelley! I have the Limited, heated leather seats, TV, air all the way back to the dogs. LOVE LOVE LOVE my Excurs. So I couldn't find a diesel and I got a V-10. 10.5 in town, but I don't commute. 22 miles to training is as far as I go. I spend about $280 in fuel avery month.

I'm so glad an Excursion will work! We're starting a family (a person family) and we already have 2 dogs, and I want to get another one! It will be so nice to be able to fit 3 crates and still have the second row of seating in!

You may have to take your spare tire out to fit two (plastic crates) side by side but the 3rd will fit long ways behind them no prob, just teach your dog to jump in the side door and into the crate. If you use 2 large wire crates they will fit side by side but the plastic ones bow out at the sides and take up more room. 3 dogs without crates will fit behinf the 3rd seat just fine. I run mine down to the river like that on quicky trips.

If you like paying for fuel in a vehicle that gets about 5 mpg. Chevy suburban or trucks are lighter, get better mpg and have less mechanical problems, are much more comfortable to ride in and are better looking :) - but really, the Excursion is just over-kill, you don't need a vehicle that heavy to transport dogs around.
