My boy "Duke", is the BEST German Shepherd there is...,I've come to that conclusion. !!   I read ."this one does this with their dog, that one does that with their dog, here a title ,,there a trainer ,every where a title,.... trainer,...............e,,i,,e,,i,,O.....  This GUY has it all,,.He is willing to do "Whatever it is to please me". He can be "gentle as a kitten, or bold as a Lion,"Whatever the situation calls for.

I still have high hopes, that I can get him to a trainer, and put his "natural abilities" to good use.Circumstances have kept me from doing so,,thus far..

I am a self proclaimed "Novice" in the art of Schutzhund, and scared, to subject my dog,.."so eager and willing", to the unknown...even tho that is what is bred into him..

I have looked for trainers in my area to no avail..... Any suggestions on keeping  him on top of "his game", until I can accomodate my dog??? (1 yr,,4 months old).

ps..sarcasism not welcome.....

kitkat,

What general area of the country do you live in?  Perhaps there's an all breed club closer to you then a GSD club you could jin for training.

Thanks for the positive,, I live in Central New York..I'm 100 plus miles from ANY CLUB...and Yes,,I am sceptical where I go,,research can only take you so far...I've tried schutzhund training before with a trainer ,,but couldn't deal with treatment of such a young girl,,  To me, it's not worth breaking a dog to , to try to make a dog,. There are HORROR stories Everywhere...

NEW TOPIC::::MAYBE!!!! ,,How in the world do you find someone to trust with your DOG! Not a titled dog, but YOUR DOG????

He is a beautiful boy.

I think everyone has or had the "best dog ever" it just depends on what you as the owners are wanting from your dog. Sometimes training is needed  or not ( those are the really smart ones!). I personally had my "best dog ever" and she could read my thoughts and connected to me in a way that no other dog has. She pasted on Mother's day this year. I don't think I will ever have another like her. She was my "special one"

As for trainers you need to be sceptical of them now days. It is scary to think people just send their dogs away not really knowing who, when, where, or how ! this trainer is working, or being with my dog.  I have been on the board a few years now and am greatful that I know about this board. I was thinking about sending my one female off the first time to a guy that sounded great and knew what the hell he was doing until I posted his name on here and HOLLY CRAPP I found out that it would of been a huge mistake. So a couple years later again on this board I am looking for a trainer agian in NC and was going to go look at a trainer  and saw on the board his name and pictures of hear say  That was it for me . Personally I am looking in to doing all my own titles. I may never see a SCHH 3 or IPO2 but hey  that is fine at least my dog will be healthy, not lost, or ????????????????????

kitkat,

He is a fine looking dog, you should finish his pedigree.

I hope you can find a trainer to work with, I too would not be sending mine off to a stranger.   I would want to be there and participate.

Do not send him into the unknown.

Brent.

I am to much of a control freak to ship my dog off to a trainer. Love the blow-hards that have sent their dogs for training then claim bragging rights for their dogs accomplishments...only out-done by the ass wipes that purchase a titled dog, then compete at the same title levels and beat out every poor schlub that spent personal time teaching and training their own fabulous dogs.

KitKat, DO NOT SHIP YOUR DOG TO A TRAINER...If you are interested, feel free to PM me  and I will share my ideas of some alternative solutions.

I found my current trainer through a recommendation from a friend.  She had gone to private training with them for issues with her dog and said they did a great job.  I called them and it turns out that they breed working line GSDs and one of them is the training director for one of the local clubs.  They have helped me use positive training methods based on what my goals are for my dog.  We're doing therapy dog training so that once I'm done with graduate school she can come to work with me.

Our worst training experience was with one of the local places that does beginning classes and most of the AKC show people train there.  My girl has issues (was rehomed by her breeder and had no training with her first owner).  She "leaks" drive, which is horribly obnoxious sounding.  They wanted me to medicate her and spray her in the face with Binaca.  There were two other GSDs in the class and the trainers were very proud that they had convinced the owners to medicate them as well; the dogs looked dazed.  We hightailed it out of there and never went back.

Word of mouth from people you trust goes a long way, IMHO.

It is a good idea to research a particular trainer.

I read alot about the "bad" trainer...but rarely about the "bad" or lazy handler.

Many people have stopped by while I was training and asked if I could help them with their dogs.  I say "sure".  They ask how much do you charge?  I say "nothing, just be here Tuesday at 9am and call if you cant make it".  The info I gave them that morning must have been enough to get the dog to stop jumping....they usually dont have the class to call and say they cant make it.

I think this is why it is hard to find a good trainer, they are tired of dealing with people/handlers.

When you find a "good" trainer be sure to ask yourself how good of a student you can be and hold yourself to the same standard.

Not directed at you personally kitkat...just a general statement.
