I was very pleased to know that once again a dog was reunited with it's owner because of a tattoo and the breeder keeping good records.

A breeder friend of mine had a private obedience class with one of her clients yesterday that lives in the country more than 2 hrs away from her. My friend called me and asked me to write down a tattoo number and explained that her client had a black and red german shepherd just appear on her property about a week ago, no collar and no tags. She kept the dog and didn't know who it belonged to. Well after getting the tattoo I decided to try and find the breeder that goes with this tattoo. I gave her a name of a breeder in Texas that might use that letter-number sequence and I called him. I explained what we had and asked him to look in his records to see if it was maybe one of his breedings. Since the dog appeared to be about 4 yrs old he said it might take some time, so he took my number. Called me back and YIPPEE, it was one of his breedings. Long story short, the dog was reunited with its owner and they were just thrilled. I have never had this happen to me, but it sure is a great feeling to know that just a little bit of work brought a dog and his family back together.  I just had to share this great feeling.

This is wonderfull, thats the reason I want my dogs tattooed. I believe Tattooing a dog is more sufficioned then a chip.

Cheers to Debbie. You made a person and a dog very happy; that's a great accomplishment.

Is there any kind of registry where a person could find an owner by tattoo  like in this situation??  How could one find an owner simply by using the tat?

Except when a dog goes to Animal Control they don't know who to call when the dog is tattooed just as most ACO's will not even know GSD's would have a tattoo in the ear and lastly they are too hard to read. So, unless the dog falls into the hands of a GSD knowledgable person it goes unannounced. Now, not all ACO's scan dogs either but there is a much higher chance that someone either ACo or Vet will find the chip and trace it. Personally, I do both to give my dogs ever chance possible, They also where ID tags when we go off the property. I was in a bad accident once and once dog stayed with me the other took off. Due to his tags, I was able to get him from the pound the next day (I was half hour away from home but my dog made it to my local pound).

Here in PA we are offered the option of a lifetime dog license.  A unique number is issued to each dog and they are tattooed on their stomach where the hair is the thinnest. Assuming a PA dog law officer could roll over a GSD to check for a tattoo, they would know what that number stood for and would only have to call the county treasurer's office. Years ago we used to use SS numbers to tattoo our dogs and registered them with the National Dog Registry. I'm not sure if they are still in business? Given there are so many different tattoo organizations, it might be a good idea to try to find out if there is a website that lists the main ones and how their numbers can be identified. If no such website exists, it might be a good project for a GSD club.
