Why is it ,that their are people who breed their Females with out getting OFA or Penn hip done first? And they find Owners of stud dogs who breed to their non x-rayed females with out seeing proof of OFA? I don't get it"

And whats worst "they sell their pups for top dollar!  Why do people do this???? I just do not understand.  Are their that many ignorant buyers to make these wanna be breeder's continue??? Or are most buyers just plain stupid??

Let me take it a step furthur.

Why is it that people out there think that just because their dog is OFA'd, they are breedworthy?

How overdone is this conversation?

What is the meaning of life?

Seriously,  the public does not know.   They don't know what good standards are, and they don't know what they can ask for and look for in a pup or breeder.

I run a dog daycare center, and most of my customers are "average" pet owners.   Caring, thoughtful,  take good care of thier dogs and spend money on them (obviously).   But they really don't know.   And many of them bought thier pups from a pet store, knowing they shouldn't.    What their criteria is for a good breeder,  based on comments I get about not yet breeding my intact female?

- AKC registered

- third heat cycle.

My bitch was only 18 mos old at her 3rd heat, and they were confused about why I wasn't breeding her.   No xrays, no titles, nothing.

That's it,  that is all they expect from a breeder for them to consider them "good", especially if they know you or someone who knows you and you are a nice person.   A hip xray would move you to excellent.  Never mind show ratings,  tatoos or microchips or training titles, or OTHER health testing.   Most don't even know those are options.

They need more education about what to look for when choosing a breeder,  and how to be better consumers.   As long as people are willing to pay,  others will produce the product.

Similar to what Don said,

Why is it that people decide their female (or male) is old enough, or the right color,  so looking for a dog to mate it with within a couple hours drive?  Yet there are enough people who should know better that see nothing wrong with it.  $$$$$$$

Yes, the discussion is so overdone.....

It may be overdone in dog breeding/training circles, but the general public isn't hearing the information!

I can answer this well

1) most breeders do not know the breed standard

2) most breeders think that breeding to a champion or good looking dogs that they feel right will creat good puppies

3) puppies off hip certified puppies are more expensive and hard to sell

4) many are not aware that the female should be mature to breed - around 2 years for a GSD. This will be her 3rd to the 4th heat. There is no harm if she is bred young but the reality is that you cannot get the hips certified less than 12 month in the UK and 24 months in the USD. its like a young school girl getting pregnant.

5) many do it for the money, in a recent understanding, I have noticed than many females get sold faster and if you see the transfer rate in the Kennel clubs - the girls get transfered more than the males. Many would like to recover there cost fast.

6) many are not aware of the potential hip problems - i have seen dogs young a 2 years with bad hips and limping.

7) Wrongful marketing by the KC, some breeders are looking for purebred registration only and some KC promote saying that a registration is quality - which is wrong

Free enterprise?

The general public is not interested in anything except a pet?

People will buy almost anything if the saleman is good enough and some are expert's?

Everyone is different, with different view's, idea's,desire's?

These are all question's......................that anyone could figure out.

It is a mute topic.

Two Moon is right, public only wants a pet. They dont care two hoots about the anything including registrations

by Rainhaus on 12 September 2008 - 06:09

Yep the public only wants pets...or you have these people breeding shit to shit because they are AKC registered...with just aright to breed  because they have the names of the parents and can register a litter.Or if they have a say for instance they buy a beagle girl//beagle male..no papers "Purebreds" they can have puppies. The pet buyers purchase throwaways from big kennels as well because they want a certain breed but have no understanding of what they are getting.Yep your right Brent it is a mute subject. The education is never going to get out there. There is nothing wrong with a mutt and there are many around.I emphasised(sp) looong ago to a Big wig...haha more than one some of my opinions over the yrs.Of course I am frowned upon because I have not proved myself. When someone asks me at work(Walmart)...Why is my gsd doing this..Why is my chow mix doing this. How come my beagle...etc etc..cross after cross...etc etc...Why is my jack russel doing this? These are pets.I'll give them slight advice.Every breed no matter how screwed up or crosses of them have a heart. But pet owners are just looking for a friend.I wont even go in to detail about the designer dogs. Not everyone can go into competitions and the ones that do get swept up in it.Maybe not all.The gsd is a wonderful dog and was once the family pet//protector//herder etc...baby sitter etc etc.If more people that owned GSD's( I hate that word owned)  just got out with their dogs..even just one with people.Maybe there would be a better understanding.I have brightened some folks day at Walmart in that I periodically take one. This foo foo stuff that a gsd cannot be a protector at home if they visit others is Bull.I went horn to horn with some people//PD...and protector K9's argueing this fact. But what do I know..God is unfolding my path.People are far too mute.Anyone that educate without gain..without bitterness and anger have the wings of a dove.....pigeon.The warmth of Jesus in heart.Candace
