Just curious to see how many put their gsds to good use for what they have.Even if it just one aspect.

Rugers Guru

by Rugers Guru on 09 September 2008 - 02:09

My boy Ruger has been taught to help clean up his toys, and the kids toys.... if he sees something on the floor he picks it up and gives it to someone.... If it is his, he puts it in his toy box. He picks up sticks from the yard and puts them in the small wood pile.

If only I could get him to bag his own poop!

Its a funny one, but the first thing that comes to mind

Georgia puts her tennis balls in a bucket (so I don't have to touch the slobbery ones).  She also lays under the table during dinner and cleans up after the kids!  Remy eats wasps - don't know how that started, but he's done it ever since we've had him.  Georgia also catches and kills mice.

They also stand at the door whenever I answer it so whoever is outside can see them.  Not barking or acting crazy, just standing and watching which is probably more intimidating because it's obvious that they are watching the person carefully.

Jarrett used to pick up all the dogs SS Dog Bowls when they were done eating. He was always SO happy to do it just for the hugs at the end. RIP J-Bear

Tasha (the gal in my sig) would find my husband for me, if he were within hollerin' distance. She would also round the cats up, and herd them inside if they were still outdoors at bedtime!

Yup, a dog that herded cats...but they WANTED to be herded, because they knew their supper was waiting!

My male GSD has a real job (hearing ear dog), and it looks like Star is going to pick this up, as well, which is what I had planned to happen eventually anyway, as he's already 6 years old. She's jealous of him giving me attention, so she gets in there and nudges him away, so she can nudge me, too!

Two Moons

Maddy and Max take shift's performing guard duty, maddy during the day mostly, and Max at night.   You can't see a black dog in the dark..:)    Nothing on two or four leg's goes un-noticed, their bark can tell me who's driving down the road or coming up the drive.  They recognize the sound's of different car's, kid's, the wife, that damned brown truck, and the mailman.   Midnite has house duty, she will bite and offer's real peace of mind at night.    Indy is too young for anything just yet, pretending to be an alarm clock is his strong suit.  He keep's excellent time by the way.     If I don't want to lock my car Maddy goes for a ride.    If I want to find something Midnite has shown a real desire to track and has done so without any real training.   We're working on improving that.   They won't pick up anything, instead they hide thing's..LOL    And Maddy is the tattle tale, telling me when one of the other's is up to no good,  or when one of the boy's is in the kitchen late at night cooking something up making a mess.   She is really hoping I'll make them share with her.   I wouldn't have a garden without them keeping the critter's away.   They also heal me when I'm sad or depressed.   I think they put me to good use, if I'm neglecting my duties they never hesitate to set me straight, I wonder who's keeping whom.

GSDXephyr

Xip keeps track of my things for me,  since I am verrrryyyy bad about putting things down and forgetting where.  She will "find"  glasses, keys, matching shoes, and hats.  Not always the ones I want, but hey she's not perfect all the time!   Lets see..   she picks up money that I drop from my pocket and hands it to me without asking her to,  and other people's money too for that matter (brings it to me though!).  Fun trick in the vet's lobby.

She'll even "find poop"  if I'm looking around with the baggie in the grass and can't find where it was depositted!

She'll carry things for me if I have my hands full too so I don't have to make two trips to the car.

If someone has been in the house when we are not home,  she runs through and checks the doors and closets to make sure they are not there still (found out this skill accidentally when we had realtors in the hous for showings while we were out during the day!!).

Now we are learning sheep herding.   I may actually buy her some sheep one of these days and then we can put that to use too.

My older female GSD, Heidi was a trailing dog for Search and Rescue.  She has assisted in teaching the youngsters how to behave, etc. She is still the best babysitter in the world. :o)

Audi my 16 month old GSD is in training as a USAR, Urban Search & Rescue dog.  She has to be tested for agility and obedience along with the ability to search and find two targets (people hidden in the pile).  She has just started training for Schutzhund BH, which I hope to put on her soon. :o)

Carney is only 11 weeks old today but will be trained as a USAR cadaver dog.  She will have to learn to work on the agility equipment, climbing ladders and being directed by the evaluator over the different equipment (see saw, elevated planks, uneven platform, etc) like her older 1/2 sister Audi.
