Hello!
I am hoping some people here may be able to direct me towards a good breeder or available dog. I am in Chicago and I am looking for a German Shepherd. I would love to find a slightly older puppy (3+ months?) or a young adult dog who would make a good family pet and therapy dog. A dog with faults is fine since I have no interested in showing, as long as they are in good health and from parents who have been health tested (good hips etc). I also like to do dog sports like agility as a hobby (not highly competitive.)
I keep finding dogs for thousands of dollars, which seems like a high price for a pet? Is that the average for a good pet quality German Shepherd?

I am in the Chicago area and know of a 9 month old female raised with a small child and another dog. She has a slight overbite and that is why she is being sold since she was purchased with the idea that she would be shown and bred. She has some obedience training and is a very beautiful, sweeti female. If you can contact me at TeamXenion@aol.com I can give you more information and send you pictures.

Feel free to email me. I have worked with GSDs from nearly every breeder in the area and may have some leads on older pups as well. The Chicagoland market is very skewed price wise compared to other parts of the country. I take calls at work all the time from people looking to buy a GSD and I am always happy to help.

Chicago,
You should not have to pay that kind of money for a pet quality dog.
But you might have to look outside the Chicago area to find it. You should not have to settle for a dog with fault's.
I've seen many wonderful dog's of pet quality in the $350.00 range with no fault's at all. You just have to shop wisely.

Chicago Canine,
Have you looked at all of the wonderful rescues and shelters around the Chicagoland area?
If you are expecting a quality breeder to give you a three month old GSD for a couple hundred dollars or less you and a thousand other people will be looking for a long time.
You may want to go to a couple of training clubs in the area. That is also a good place to look. Usually the club members know of dogs looking for homes.

I agree with Two Moons. There are quality pups that go from $350-$500 but some of the breeder's might not be that well educated on what they are producing. As long as you can get a WRITTEN guarantee on hips/health, etc then you will be fine. There are also an awful lot of GSD's that would make awesome therapy, and agility dog's that are in rescue's, and kill shelter's. I would look there also. Good Luck in your findings.
