We have a 7 month old GSD who is from Shutzhund parents although we do not plan on competing with him. He has a retained testicle and we will have to have that removed but didn't plan on castrating him. If we do it won't be until his head and body have matured. The "problem" is his multiple "erections" during the day. They occur when he plays, sits waiting for something or when he is glad ot see you, actually often the "cause" isn't readily dicearnable. Will he outgrow this behavior? I don't recall our other Male GSD's having this problem. He seems happy and healthy but my daughters don't think he should have what they call the "red rocket" so frequently. Thanks for any help. RJ

chekodah,

He's still growing, the testicle may be causing some of this but it's not really that uncommon anyway.

The Red Rocket??   LOL...    It should pass as he mature's I would think.

it could be what is called "penis crowning" which is a stress signal

http://www.dogscouttroop107.com/BodyLanguage101.html

i would recommend teaching the pup to calm himself. it's a "perception modification"

http://synalia.com/introduction-to-concepts/

about 3/4 the way down this page http://www.synalia.com/articles/beyondmodification.html there is a section entitled

"PERCEPTION MODIFICATION OR COUNTER-CONDITIONING"

it will explain this concept and I highly recommend the SATS email group there is a lot of info in the files and the list can walk you through teaching it. My husband has a 10 mo American Bully who loves to sit on our 6 yo daughters head:)) she a good sport about it but I taught him "easy" in no time using this method.  now when he comes "flying" into the bedroom heading for our 6 you dd we simply say 'easy' and he hops onto the bed and calms down - slows his pace - slowly approaches and stops about a foot away only getting closer when invited - nice change:))

susan

Excercise that pup!

Five sessions a day of retrieving, tugging, running around.  His arousal is natural, but the frequency may be due to insufficient physical stimulation.  A tired pup is far less likely to show off his wares.

The work is also needed on so many other levels, too.

It's natural. My 10 month old has been a Horn Toad since he was about 5 months. Yes, the Red Rocket!

Hi

I have a 14 month old and he has the same problem. When I took him to the vet when he was 8 weeks. The vet's aid asked my dog,   'Why are you showing me your willy?' He is still showing his willy.

He gets lots of excrcize too! I am glad to know there are other owners with the same problem. I feel better now, LOL!!

Both my 10 month old and 14 month old have the same problem it is becoming less with my 14 month old so i figure they will just grow out of it.

Tell your daughters not to worry, it's just natural.   It's a mostly young "boy" dog  thing, they aren't even aware their "lipstick" is showing most of the time, and if it's just peeking out, believe me, it's not errect.

"Lean with it, Rock with it" as they say.

Hi Chekodah,

I too have a crypt. He is 3.5 years. As a pup he also could not  contain his excitement.lol I also waited for him to mature,(2 years) before I neutered him.

It was after this that the "winky wonkas" seemed to  lesson. My word, prior to that I felt badly for the poor guy,it seemed he had a perpetual erection.Had my husband been prescribed viagra, we would have thought he sucked down a month's worth.Good luck.Just a suggestion, keep him away from your legs.

Regards,

Ravenhawk

p.s.I did take him to the vet and there were no medical problems.

When my male's were younger they both hung outa their short's alot , mostly while sitting.   It went away , but what I speak of was not sexual arousal.

The OP did not make this clear as to what over excitement meant.

I've seen dog's that would hunch a foot ball and couldn't be allowed around kid's.  I didn't think that's what Cheko meant.

More specific's I guess.
