Mystere

Not something I personally am interested in at all.       But, the puppy in the ad does have the mischievious and devilishly intelligent look in the eye that I do like!   Unfortunately, even for those interested in such a cross, the parents are 'pets." Doesn't mean that they could not have great drives, but....

If it is a good dog, what does it matter?  Breeding?  I see malinois that no doubt have GSD in there somewhere.  Look in Ivan's book towards the front.  There is a mali that looks 100% GSD.

My Wife is not 100% German, but I think our kids will turn out fine.

Personally, I am very intrigued with the idea of Mali/GSD or Dutchie/GSD crosses.  I know this is very common in parts of Europe for both sport and military/police use.  I do get a lot of questions about my own dog, who is a  dark grey  sable,  with  a ton of drive, and is very upright.  I'm not sure if it's because people are becoming more familiar with Malinois or if it's because they still have no clue as to what a working line GSD tends to look like.     I am sure if the day comes I can't find a working line GSD breeder who is breeding dogs with enough "juice" and good health,  I would look in the direction of someone experienced in breeding these crosses.

I was wondering about a Dutchie/Mal cross, why don't we hear more about them?  Not that I'm in a hurry to get one.    I have my hands full with the GSD's I have now.

Nia, ALL puppies are cute, that's the problem......

I have been told there is a very good reason why some Czech dogs have Malinois faces..

Actually, my first "concern" was with the parents being "pets." As to the cross itself, well, HELL, how many dogs from Belgium with "gsd papers" clearly reflect the Mal grand-daddy peeking out from the woodpile? Plus, I have seen "Mals" in major competitions that sure as heck looked like gsds to me. (Tina, I don't know if you ever saw Les's old compeititon dog, Nico, but he clearly had a saddle and other gsd markings...especially for a Malinois.) I could frankly see having a gsd/dutchie cross, because that temperament and nerve structure would not be such a "shock to my system" as a Mal cross, AND I could end up with that beautiful brindle that I think would be so cool with my complexion! Yep, all puppies are cute, but they don't all have that happy, irrepressible, "I'm a little imp" expression on their faces.

Nia, you are a silly woman. Tthere is no way a GSD can have Malinois blood and have papers. We all know that the national breed clubs would never let that happen.

Also why would someone screw up the GSD gene pool with Mal blood. I know Mals win most trials when both breeds go head to head, but the GSD bloodline must remain pure for the love of vom Stephanitz! Purity of blood means more than anything.

I've seen a number of crossbreeds, either accidental or deliberate, and some were great.  One woman came into the Vets with this georgous blue dog... 1/2 Great Dane and 1/2 Rodesian Ridgeback.  One of the most interesting results of a "breeding" was back when I was first starting out, and had an OOPS between my Shepherd male, and Akita female.  The families who adopted them wrote to me for years afterwards some asking for another, but I don't believe in deliberately mixing breeds and passing them off as a New breed like the Puggles and such.  But I have to admit they can be adorable...

Actually, Christopher, I think the crosses result from people trying to improve those Mals with a little gsd blood to give them more "substance," physically and otherwise. Everyone knows that you cannot improve on the gsd--you can only be generous and magnanimus with its blessings. :-)
