Like most, I thought the original thread was a medical one. But it reminded me of a medical disease that I thought was rather rampant in GSDs - although I haven't heard about it recently. That is anal fistulas. I've heard it's a really, really horrible disease. But mostly today we hear about DM, EPI, bloat, cancer. Maybe the anal fistula thing is on its way out? Anyone know anything about it?

It is a subject we have discussed often here and no, it has not disappeared from the list of more common disorders found in GSDs, and yes, it can be a terrible problem for many GSDs and their owners.

I have a 3yr old male from West German lines, he has had this although caught early both times June 07 and July 08 so treated successfully, but no doubt long term it will come back., I also know of a few others again WG lines in the UK that have been diagnosed with this.

I had a female GSD with perianal fistulas, who died at 13 and a half years old last fall. She had other medical problems too. Yes, it is a difficult disease to deal with and requires daily medication. My bitch was American showlines, but I understand that any line can carry this immune system disease.
