Is this one of the oldest recorded dogs? Every pedigree I look all the way back to ends with this dog. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/8309.html

Well, he was one of the breed's founding fathers--you can see that his daughter was SV156 -- http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/8244.html -- so she was the 156th SV registered dog.
The comments say that the picture is not actually of Grief, so take the picture with a grain of salt.

i happened across this earlier today and posted on it on the white gsd thread; not sure it's what you're looking for but here's what i read about this dog;
The maternal grandfather of Horand von Grafrath, the first entry "SZ 1" in the SV Stud Book, was a white-coated German shepherding dog named Greif von Sparwasser.
