 Hello All:

I am looking for recommendations on some sort of flooring that I can use outside in a concrete dog run that i have in my back yard.  Something to go over the concrete to keep my 10 month old pup off the hard cement when she is outside.  Perhaps some thick interlocking rubberized type floor?

I've tried beds that would keep her off the ground but she just destroys them.  If someone has a suggestion on an outdoor bed that's puppy-proof that would work as well.  Thank you in advance for your comments.

Horse stall mats.  There are a few kinds but I have used and recommend the heavy one-piece kind - they are 4' X 6' and about 2" thick - very heavy so the dogs cannot move them or chew them to shreds either.  They are great to put over concrete.  Here is the link to TSC - but you can probably find them elsewhere.  There are also other stall-mat products that may work, just beware of too-thin as dogs may move and chew them up.  http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_10001_34608_-1______?rFlag=true&cFlag=1

Dan, I have black rubber horse stall mats in my dog pen. Now they do get hot in the summer so I also have a tarp or two on there also for shade.  I got these mats from my former boss for free but they can be somewhat pricey. Also, when the mats get wet the black can come off onto the dog. I,personally, havent had an issue with that though.  Hope that helps some.

try some soft ceramic tiles to go over the cement or try Kennel Decks  www.kenneldeck.com

I use horse stall matts in my indoor kennels (I don't kennel my dogs when outside, they run in the entire yard) and to date, even my most destructive dogs have not touched them. They are VERY heavy and you will need several helpers but well worth it. Also very easy to clean if the dog messes on it, especially if it is outside where you can hose it. They are a bit pricey as someone else mentioned but you can get them on sale from time to time. I just picked mine up at Agway Feed Store for $35.00 (4ft x 6ft x 2in)

Thank you all.  I think I will give the horse stall mats a try.  Does Agway have a website?

Molly -

The price of $35 was a sale price last fall. What is the going price in your area? Should I buy a bunch and resell them to ya'll!! :o) The owner here at my local Agway is awesome to me giving me the best prices for dog food and let me trade coupons if they will be paid the same amount. Like when Canidae just switch their bags from 40 to 35 pounds, the price stayed the same. He saved the last bunch of 40# bags for me in the back and started selling the 35# to everyone else. Then when Canidae sent me all sorts of coupons for the 35# bags, he let me use them on the 40# as his reimbusement price would be the same. I can't say much for their employees but the owner is the best.

I was wrong though, mine are 4ft by 6ft by 3/4 inches (not 2 inches). Maybe that;s the price difference. There is also 1/2 inch which would probably be heavy enough but I would definately stay away from the thin "Dog Mats".

Local farm supply store sells the horse stall mats around here for $40.  I have seen them on sale once for $35 or so.  They work well, are almost indestructable, but are hot, hot, hot in the summer even with a shade.  You will also want two grown men and a small boy to load and unload them.  They are deceptively heavy.

Good luck,
