So sad, I am surre that the hendler feels devastated and blames (rightfully) himself for the accident. So sad.

Well, he killed his own dog, they say it was an accident..... I don't believe ANYONE could intentionally shoot their dog after he has defended you his whole career. They are investigating it, so I will post updates if I get them.

trigger-happy perhaps? Who shoots their gun, let alone their own dog, without knowing for sure what they are shooting at? What was he thinking? Or not thinking? Very scary to know there are people - especially police officers - out there who shoot first and think second.

The only thing I can possibly think of is an accidental discharge. There are dozens of ways someone could have an accidental discharge. I never thought it would happen to me but it did one day in training. You train and train, and train, and train some more. You do your best to try and prevent mistakes but sometimes shit happens.
Again, as always, we were not there and have no way of knowing. There is always someone who knows about police work ready to chime in and bash the cops though.
How many of us have practiced something 100 times, then went and blown it on trial day? The difference is when cops make mistakes the stakes are higher and unfortunately get judged by people who have no idea.
Here is something to think about. How about coming off a trial field after not doing so well and have an AKC Canine Good Citizen judge tell you what you did wrong and what a dumbshit you are?

> Molly have you ever been out at that time of the evening in a strange place (residence) not knowing if there are potholes, clotheslines, gardening tools, etc: I can tell you there are a number of obstacles at night you can't seee while trying to keep quiet and out of the line of fire that could cause an accidental discharge.
> I know because I have been involved in a couple of shooting incidents this time of the morning with my assigned K-9s and I never fired first, just returned fire!!
> Until you have been there done that why don't you wait for the details instead of the usual misinformed armchair quarterbacking done around here on most occasions!! .
