Hello All,

How do you train and how long does it take to train a dog for an AD??

If your dog is already in good shape from being worked and excercised regularly you don't really need to train anything special.

Perhaps you want to ride with your dog on a bike so you don't fall over, and if you can teach your dog not to pull on the bike you will be better off on the AD. But for conditioning unless your dog is a couch potatoe all you need is some regular excercise.  Find out what type of surface the AD will be run on

When my club had a trial a few years ago we offered an AD, three of our dogs that entered were nto going to enter, the judge told us to just do it, we had never been on a bike with our dogs before EVER, one dog had to stop because his pad tore (we were on the street) and the other 6 dogs all passed included the two that were not going to enter.

My butt was killing me the next day, and Sasha was moving up those stairs much slower, but she did fine after she stopped pulling me about two miles into the run!!

Is there any special equipment you need for your bike?  I've heard of some type of spring so the dog doesn't wipe you out...

One of my club members had the springer, but he used to ride with his dog often.   I just had a leash. One thing to remember is that you can not use a pinch collar on the day of the AD, so if you are like me and don't train your dog to ride next to you on the bike, he or she may pull you like crazy!!!!

Oh yeah, my dog is worked regularly, and he is in good shape. A lean 80 lbs. I have ridden on a bike before with him, but I ALWAYS used a pinch collar, because he loves to pull, after a while though he gets a little tired and slows it down. He also instead of trotting, likes to run, I don't know if this can really be corrected. Anyways I will enter and see what happens.......I am sure my butt will be sore the next day too LOL!

  1. Buy a "springer" for a bicyle
  2. Rent a 10-12 yr. old child.

I hate the AD.
