I wanted to share in case anyone out there is looking to spay their females at any time really.   I had Sasha spayed yesterday, and chose the pay the extra $100 to have it done laparoscopically.  I was a wreck just because of the surgery, but she is doing awesome!  I picked her up last night and she was tired and I am sure a bit sore, but she ran up the stairs like nothing and jumped on the bed.  Of course I tried to keep her from being active, but we did have to get upstairs to go to bed!   Today she is doing great!!!  I took a couple of pictures just to show how little of an incision they had to make to do this procedure.  With her they had to make one extra hole the top one since she has been in heat before and needed to remove the uterus, but if she had not there would have only been the small incision on the bottom and the hole to the left.    You can barely see the hole to the left, it looks more like a cigarette burn than anything.  The best thing is no stitches!!  Everything is under the skin, and it is very clean.  She doesn't have to go back unless we have a problem, which at this point it's not looking like we will.   Anyhow I know there are not that many vets that do this YET, but if you are lucky to have one within driving distance this is a great way to do it!   Have a great weekend!!

YES that is a nickel!!

You say that the only reason that she has the extra hole was,

        > Because she had been on heat before they had to remove the uterus <

I am sorry if I have missunderstood but don't they always remove the uterus?

Or is it because she has had a heat recently and the uterus was enlarged?

It is a very neat job, still you should be extra careful that she does not over do things as she has still had major surgery.

She looks like a very nice happy girl.

No she did not have to stay the night. She was in surgery when I called to check on her at noon and I picked her up at 5:30.  The nurse said she was sleeping until she asked her if she was ready to go home and then she jumped up and started cirling!

As for laparoscopic spaying from what I think the vet told me is hat if they have not had a heat cycle they only remove the ovaries and tie off.  If they have had a heat cycle then they go ahead and also remove the uterus since there is potential still of pyometra.

I think (I am not a vet) that in traditional spays they just remove everything since the dog is opened up and they are in there.  WIth Lap spays, they don't.

ovariectomy and ovariohysterectomy  - the two different types of spaying

And of course she is taking it easy, I keep her away from the puppies and baby gated her down stairs today while I was at work!  She is doing very well though.

Wow I am just amazed at how my girl is really back to herself today!  It is taking all that I can do to get her to chill, I suppose I should crate her, but she is going stir crazy,  I let her go out with the boys for a few minutes this morning and she was chasing and being chased, and I had to run to the door and bring her in the house!!

She will be in the house hanging out by herself today, and I am going skydiving!  So if you don't see me back on the board you know why  although I expect smooth falling and an open shoot!

This procedure since it has been perfected takes less time so not having to keep the dog under anesth. as long as before. KariM have a great time.

My vet told me it only takes about 20 minutes per procedure as opposed to nearly an hour for a typical spay.
