Hello,
O.K. for a person who wants to find information on genetic issues in lines where would one be able to find this information.
I have asked many local breeder about health issues and they all say they have none in there lines. I'm in the NW and I ask about what they like about certain lines, hip issues ect. They all say they do not have these problems, which I find hard to believe. I know many breeders do not want faults known, but I'm trying to learn about this breed and getting fustrated. Any good resources out there?
Thank you

best thing to do is find a HONEST, old breeder who has been around a while. but it is quite hard to find a mentor nowadays. ask questions. remember every line is going to have problems. breeding dogs is not an exact science and unfortunately shit happens.
But any breeder that says they have never had a problem is lying and you should run the other way

UBERLAND: Your avitar almost made me choke on my coffee...now its all over my keyboard....lol It looks like it will jump right out and get you.!
No line is free of defects or hip problems and any breeder that advertises they dont have it anywhere in line, is a liar..You just dont know about it, and they dont know either..People with bad hipped dogs or pups dont tell or dont talk much about it. They will say, yes , we have had one or two pups in our litter with it...Just so your told , there are no sure guarantees, no matter what the OFA hips of the parents and grand parents are.

Thanks,
Finding a older breeder is very hard, I'm not looking to breed, just want some good history on lines and what they produce and what lines have faults. I'm more interested in History of lines and why a breeder would want a certain stud. or use a certain bitch. Most of them answer with look at the titles. I'm really not interesed in title - just the standard and what to look for and avoid. I've been attending shows and trails, and sit back and listen to everyone.

well, attending shows and just listening to people is a good start. I don't put too much into titles as a really good trainer can title a bad dog, or a really good dog won't get titles because of a bad trainer/handler. titles are not everything. I like to look at families. I want to see what grandparents produced, what their siblings produced and go from there all down the pedigree. try finding some old breed books. I found a wealth of knowledge from them. also don't be afraid to just email people or even post on this board about what particular dogs have produced. You will find good and bad in all lines. people that tell you , just look at his titles, probably don't have a good grasp on the dogs producing ability or history. alot of those people will take a bitch to the top showing male in the country, because that is what will sell the pups. doesn't matter if he is a good match for their bitch or not.
just because a dog is VA or BSP Ch. or multi SCH3 does not mean he is appropriate breeding partner for every bitch out there.
