K-9mom

by K-9mom on 29 August 2008 - 03:08

Ok, let's say you have a litter of pups, since the pups were born, there is a female who will not stop squirming when you hold them and at 3 weeks of age, you try holding the pup upside down but she is so bad you must pin the pup with your hand and she barks and growls the entire time. When you approach the kennel, she comes to the front (now still 3 weeks old) like some of the others but she beats them and barks (like she's the little head honcho). Where would you place this puppy when 8 weeks? Experienced Pet, Sport, or Work? I know, there is still much more time to evaluate her but just want to get people's opinions. The other 5 pups are squirmy but "chill out" as expected.

It would be impossible to find that one a home.  But being the kind hearted person i am, i'll take the pup off your hands.

What's the pedigree look like?

sounds like a dominate girl to me!  definitly a working/sport home.  if she did go for a pet, make sure the owners were fully aware of what she will become and they are more than willing to get involved in obed. and some sort of activity.  whether it be agility, herding, rally, ect.  She will need a strong handler, someone who won't let her get her way and will let her know who's boss.

That's what I was thinking. I am not sure I have ever had one so dominant at this age. She's quite the little pistol. Unfortunately I received the mom already 4 weeks pregnant with no papers on either parent. Mom is a Bi colored Long Coat (that they shave!! UGGHH!!!) and dad is a gorgeous Sable. I would guess both are from work line or at least a mix of Work & Old Pet Lines?? The people kept the male and two pups from their last litter (they refused to spay the bitch and they got pi**ed when she would get pregnant over & over so they decided she needed to go). their comment when I asked why they would keep two of her male pups from the last litter was "At least they won't have puppies". I believe she's had three litters over time.

She had 6 VERY nice pups. 5 Sable and 1 Blk/Tan. I have pet homes for most of them but this girl has me a tad worried so I may have to hold her back. I even have a wonderful home for the mom once she's spayed! YAH!!!

Much too early to make an assessment.

Personally I would test her on scent work and see how she does. If she does good and does tug good . I would talk to a police department or officer looking for his next replacement.

K-9mom,

#1 If you had to line them up, is she the biggest,  littlest, or in between#2,3,4,5 ??

#2 When they play is she on top aggressive or on bottom the victim, how does she fit in with her litter mate's?

#3 When you go up to the kennel is she barking at you, or for you?    Is she saying back off or play with me first?                   Is she wagging her tail?

#4 Have you seen her figure out anything first before the other's?   First to jump over a divider, first to discover the new toy?First to recognize the sound of your car or someone's voice , or the sound of preparing the food?

#5 Has she ever tried to bite you?  Or act suspicious?   Or is she all kiss's and jumping up?

3 week's old is kinda young but I alway's watch my pup's for sign's.   I look for intelligence above all else.  Growling at that age could mean a couple of thing's.  Aggression yes, but why?   Watching may offer an answer.

First to the front, first in line could mean she's figured out what's coming, food or attention.  Intelligence.

I love watching them grow and develope personalities.    Offer them some sort of challenge and see who's first to overcome it.    A tube, a wall,  a large ball.    See which one is first to come to you when you call, who's paying attention. Bring in a total stranger(adult) to the pups and see how they react.

There's so much to learn just by watching for sign's.    And the more you watch and the older they get you'll get a real feel for what's going on in the litter.    By 8 week's you'll know.

I have 7 and 5 out of the 7 are just like her and worse..They Fly out of the kennel, and watch me with eyes you wont believe...Up and over each other have to get o me and dont care where or how...looking and watching, for anything to put in mouth.., tug it , run off with it, fight over it...and they are 6 weeks old and only getting harder and my feet and akles are just the right size for the mouths of 4 of those 5..one of the five doesnt attack my ankles , shoes or toes...she jumps up at me...kissy kissy and tails wagging 90- miles an hours...only one of the 7 is docile ..she is kissy and waggy and just grabs my hands and chases the others...but no barking yet or grabbing..she is going to a home with a Downs child and then on to Lehohkear kennels for training...

Mine are leaping, nor jumping out of the kennels to get to me...i have not one inch on either arm that is not bleeding and bruised or scratched..cut nails last night...so K-9 Mom...it will only get better , I mean harder...I tried hiding from the 5 and they stared me down...they saw me behing the door of the nursery and they just sat staring and one turned head, the door I was hiding behind squeaked and all 5 came up and barked...this was at 4 weeks old..One male has an attitude and cocky but kissy and waggy...other male is like a dog paddling badger..his legs are going still when you pick him up to give a shot or clean him and he lurches out and wants down , right now...no alpha on him...I had to almost sit on him to give his shot tonight..he bit my lip instead of kissing me...lol   what fun...

Rose,

I forgot to mention the scar's..lol    Both hand's and arm's look like I abuse myself on purpose.

Seem's like every litter alway's has one that's a bully to it's littermate's, one pup is alway's the victim that the other's pick at and is alway's on bottom.   But alway's one will seem to be just one up on all the rest when it come's to being fearless but friendly, smart and alert, even problem solving.   One's alway's sweet and one's alway's a hellion.

Those baby claw's are like fish hook's and milk teeth too.   I can't help getting them all worked up playing with them and ending up bleeding..

I think all the year's of watching all my animal's has taught me more than I could have learned anywhere else.  And I enjoyed all of it.

Hope your lip heal's..lol

She is my Wild Child all over.  Exactly.  She would bully the rest, she would be up on the wire at the edge of the pen pushing the others over, she would grab and shred the newspapers, she lived in a nylon harness the first few months of her life as she would choke herself out on a collar.  She would drag my male who was 6-months older around the house by his neck,   Wild Child would have been returned from many the buyer do to her "drive".  There may be a working home that would be interested.  Not all doing schutzhund want to breed nor care if the dog if registered.  LEO is a great suggestion also, or a large coporate security that uses drug and bomb dogs.

BTW, I love Wild Child.  She is also now very gentle when need be but kick ass on the field.  She does flying kisses and just KNOWS people need their ears washed.  She's also the ultimate bitch and can never ever be loose with any of my other girls.  She's my current avitar.
